So the story is, she's had pains in her stomach for years, and she's been kinda knocked about and misdiagnosed for ages. Anyway, they finally found something, which was these growths in her intestines. They could be life-threatening, and develop into cancer later.

She left the house just over half an hour ago, and she's in hospital now. Going in for the operation tomorrow where they're going to remove the problematic section of her intestines, and connect the two ends up. There's still a risk that they may find cancer.

As you can imagine, right now I'm absolutely sick with worry. I love her dearly.

I think just getting it off my chest might help, so there it is.

Hope she's alright man... she's in the best place possible so stay positive. It seems that it's been found fairly early hence improving chances of making a full recovery.

My mum had pains in her back for a year, her GP kept fobbing her off, eventually she was brought into casualty with the pain - where they found cancerous tumours on her spine. Another two days and she would have been paralysed. They told us it didn't look good.

Then they fixed her, and she's doing great. You will be amazed at how much hospitals can do, and how much they can fix, when the outlook is initially bleak.

My uncle was misdiagnosed with Crohn's disease for years but after abdominal surgery in about 2003 they discovered that it was in fact ulcerative colitis and that he had colon cancer....the surgery seemed to do the trick tho.

Hope she's ok and the surgery goes well.

Hi Karl.

I know what you're going through. I don't know if you want to hear it, because my mams story (bowel cancer, almost exactly as you describe, but later with major complications) doesn't yet have a happy ending (it's still ongoing, and uncertain), but if you want I'd happily discuss it. PM me at any stage if you feel like it.

The only specific thing I'd say is that if it is the same as what my mam had done, it's one of the better places to get such a growth. As you say, they can cut out the tumorous section and stitch the two ends together. Such operations have a high rate of success, and the bowel is a resilient organ that is very good at repairing itself. In my mothers case the initial operation was a complete success and completely removed the cancer. (I'm not a doctor of course, but that's to my best knowledge and my mothers experience.)

That gut wrenching feeling is horrible, the sense of despondency. In my and my families experience, you've just got to be strong. Stiff upper lip has a bad rep, but it's not a bad thing in my book. Assume nothing, make sure she has everything she needs, and be there to talk to her. Look after your family and be there to support each other.

It's mad, that moment when your parents stop worrying about you, and you start to worry about them. You'd near forget they once got on fine without you.

Sorry to hear that, Karl. I hope she's going to be okay. Even if they do find cancer, there's no need to get too worried yet. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer just over 2 years ago. She had a mastectomy, chemo and radiation therapy, and was back climbing mountains within about 6 months. She's better now than ever.

I hope they don't find cancer in your mums case, but it's not the end of the world if they do. I'll say a prayer for her!

This may seem a small crumb of comfort but if they did'nt feel the need to rush your mum into theatre this evening then maybe its not going to be as bad as you proberly are imagining (human brains ability to conjure up the worst is not helpful!). I imagine the C word was what scared you all most but as noted by Faith much can be done these days.

Hope she's alright man. A close friend of mine had similar abdominal pains for years, it turned out to be a very large benign tumor which she had out recently. Scared the absolute sh1te out of everyone but she's made an excellent recovery and her pains are completely gone.

What I'm trying to say is, these things can seem a whole lot worse beforehand than they do afterwards. Hope she makes a good recovery.
