"Opposites attract" for me. Viva la difference! ;) Do have friends who are gay, les, or bi and that's their right. But that's not me.

My little brother heard that stat before me and didn't get it. "Gav, are you Chinese?... Am I Chinese? Are Mum or Dad Chinese? Is Gran Chinese?... but one in five people are Chinese..."

    Genuine confusion on his face!

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think you're necessarily right. I think rsynnott hit the nail on the head because we don't seem to think about it too much. We're hardly likely to dwell on it - not much point, is there?

Nobody gives bisexuals any credit. They're all either "confused", "in denial", "greedy" or "chancers/experimenting". I guess people are entitled to their own opinions, but nothing annoys me more than seeing a couple happy together, while behind their backs everyone nods knowingly - "Shure they were never bi, they were gay/straight and didn't want to come out/were just experimenting." None of anyone else's business, as far as I can see.

I used to work for a govt agency that did a lot of testing. At the end of the tests we'd hand out "equality questionnaires", to make sure the tests were fair. One of the questions asked about the sexuality of person taking the test. You would be shocked by the amount of people, generally in late teens to mid twenties, who would ask "which is the right answer?" or what the terms (heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual) mean.

I've always believed that we are all by default bisexual, but along the way we generally lean one way or the other.

That said, I do think that a lot of girls will say they are bisexual because it's kinda trendy to be so these days.

(The ultimate test is to whether or not they would consider a same sex life mate, for those who can take a bit of monogomy)

Are the people answering as Bisexual actually bi, or just those girls who score their friends in night clubs when they're drunk cos it's sexy apparently and makes them look cool?

What if you think members of opposite sex can be hot but don't want to sex them fully. What then?

10%? I heard it was 4% of men and 3% of women were gay. Don't know about bi's but I know quite a few people who don't mind a threesome, but wouldn't consider themselves bi.

A surprising number of people think 'homosexual' is for men only. I suppose this may be because they think it's the Latin 'homo', rather than the Greek.

Well, this is the thing; there are no certain numbers available.

Er, no, it's honest-to-God genuine curiosity about the real portion of non-straight people in the world. Like, where did they ever get the stat from in the first place?

Let me get this straight (excuse the pun):

You're curious as to where the 10% figure first came from.

You've got access to the web.

You haven't gotten the answer yet.

    Wow.

    John, definitely.

No, the Kinsey report had a lower percentage for female homosexuals.

Still the report was flawed (one of the flaws being much the same as the main one here, it was not even vaguely demographically balanced). There have been lots of surveys since, though far from anything conclusive.

this proves my theory that less than 5% are homosexual, going by the 3 guys from my class of 65 who were gay
    Hopefully not a statistics class.

Besides, maybe one of those 3 was really straight but wouldn't admit it (could be afraid of his parents finding out maybe).

    1 in 21.667 is less than 5%.
    Nope, wasn't statistics class. :)

Only 80% of people are straight? I have never heard of those figures, I would have put it at much less numbers of homosexuals. That's like one in five people in my class are gay or similarly inclined. Were people able to pick gay and bisexual in the poll?

Choosing gay and bisexual wouldn't make any sense; in any case, it was a radio button. 20 does seem SLIGHTLY high; from what I've seen anecodtal evidence supports a figure of 10-15.

Anyway, it doesn't mean that one in five people in your class are gay or bi. (Bi is as much like being straight as it is like being gay). That's not how statistics work. Certainly, they COULD be; everyone in your class except (presumably) you COULD be.
