    Disgusting...horrible....vile....WTF?

Anyone reading this thread would think that you lot were perfect. I suppose none of you have ever picked your nose, bit your nails, scratched your nuts or your ass, picked wax from your ears, f@rted etc

Theres probably a medical reason for it and even if there isnt, it's not against the law.

    So suck it up.

    Hi folks,

Has anyone else noticed the amount of saliva being spat onto our streets? I'm convinced people are doing more and more of it lately. You can't walk across O'Connell Bridge, up Westmoreland St or anywhere in the city centre without either seeing someone spitting on the ground or seeing the big globs someone has left there a while before. It's disgusting!

Yesterday I saw a man (well dressed enough; early 30's, jeans, nice jacket, glasses, off duty professional looking type) walking along by the wall of Trinity College and as I was walking towards him I saw him spit a huge blob of saliva onto the ground in front of him. I gave him the filthiest look possible as I walked towards him and said "That's disgusting" when I reached him but he just kept walking and pretended he hadn't heard me! Grrrrrr!

I thought spitting was outlawed hundreds of years ago for spreading disease. Why is it making a comeback now? There must be something wrong with people who think it is acceptable to go around spitting on the street. Why can't they just swallow their saliva like any normal person?

must be a Dublin problem, not such a problem in Cork.
but it is disgusting, just shows the class of people.

I don't do them in public and I certainly don't leave phlegm lying around the footpaths. It's disgusting. If I need to spit, I'll do it into a tissue.

Don't visit Texas! Some of the bars have spitoons, and because some spitters have such poor aim, or don't care, the walls around can be covered with spit. Yuk!

I have had a really bad cough and phlegm gathers. I can't stop spluttering unless I try to cough it up. If I happen to be walking down the street and my mouth is full of it, I can either swallow it back down and continue spluttering or spit it out.

FFS, swallowing leads it into the stomach where the bugs are all killed stone dead by the hydrochloric acid.

I have asthma and I've never felt the need to spit in the street, it's absolutely rotten and skanger-like imo.

Should see Talbot Street around 7.45am. Gross!

    Then carry tissue around.

For fear of being stamped to the ground olike those horrible people spitting :P, i will stay reasonably neutral except to say...

    1) In the Ice age, yes, i remember that, long time ago.... People were able to spit freely... they mauled animals to skavage meat, and guess what! they didn't use forks... Manners, yeah, manners!...They was no Highway patrol men(like 4/5 people who posted in this thread)...

Will all you arsehole whiners get a bloody life. Yes, those damn skangers spit on the street when a girl is walking by to look cool but ther are those with medical conditions, etc.

Mordeth, Terry, I agree whole heartedly with both of you, pitty that you two are the only people that are afraid to see a bit of harmless water on a street...

...My dog(who died two weeks ago) was able to ****e on the street but I'm not even allowed to throw an odd spit when i have a head cold...

Start by banning spitting from those football players on £100k a week and 14year olds might stop getting tempted...

As for the hydrochloric acid post, acid is only in the stomach where a half litre exists, on the way down the osegaughus(spell?), there is no acid, which means it has contact with the lungs promoting infection.

Anything that has been touched by other people and not sterilised contains infection... and the ground carries infection anyway, so a word of advic, don't touch it, and it won't hurt you!!

Your lungs are not part of your oesophagus. We all have a very handy little device called an epiglottis which blocks off the entrance to the trachea, thus preventing what we swallow going anywhere near our lungs. If you can swallow your dinner without choking and you can drink without drowning - you can certainly swallow your own saliva without harming yourself.

Saliva is not water and I actually thought Terry et al were NOT afraid to see saliva on the street!

Just because something's dirty doesn't mean you should indulge your filthy habits and make it dirtier.

Of course your dog ****s on the ground. His brain is not as highly developed as ours and he doesn't understand the importance of hygiene, though obviously some posters here don't either! :D It's actually an offence to allow your dog to **** on the street and to leave it there though. Pooper-scooper could be called the doggy equivalent of you using a tissue for anything you can't swallow (which is anything coming out of your nose, not saliva)!

The only decent bit of comment you made was that the professional footballers should be banned from spitting....hear hear. :)

By the way folks, saliva is actually supposed to be swallowed anyway. That's what it was designed for. It moistens food, helping us to swallow it. It also conatins the enzyme amylase which breaks down starch. Saliva is therefore an integral and major part of digestion and thus perfectly safe to be swallowed.

Saliva's one thing....swallowing phlegm that's just been expelled by your lung(s) though? No thanks chuckles...

Like I said earliert, two differing types of spitting....the hardman scumbag, make white pools on the street corner to impress your buddies and the normal evacuation of phlegm or mucus (which unless you're completely dying from some chest infection or a very heavy smoker) will be a relatively rare occurence and I really don't see the need for society in general to get their collective knoickers in a twist over.
There's a pretty bad flu/chest infection thing going about just now and a lot of people are feeling the need to clear their chests. It's not like they are intentionally spitting on the street just to annoy you or to look cool to their pals...

If it's a chest infection people are claiming they need to clear, then spitting it out is only going to spread it to more people. The tiny droplets that will escape up into the air get breathed in and infect others and you might even get re-infected yourself if one of those people shares your filthy habit and spits near you the following week. Use a tissue and put it in the bin.

By the way, if there's an infection then the phlegm will be greenish/yellow. I only seem to see white globs on the streets, scumbags.

No but there are too many to miss.
Watching your step happens to be a good (and productive) idea, helps avoid slips, trips & falls y'know.

You told him you were disgusted? What if he didn't have a tissue? Where's he supposed to spit? I have a pretty bad cold these days and I spat into a gutter on the way in to college today. Don't think there's anything wrong with that, I'd rather not have a big mound of phlegm in my mouth. So what if you have to look at it for a second? I'd much rather look at someone spitting, then having phlegm in my mouth.

    Quit moaning over nothing.

Heartening to see our colleges inculcating consideration for others.

The amount of ignorant people out there (and here on boards) is alsolutely amazing.

But I like to spit, I don't like phlegm in my mouth, I'm too lazy/cheap/both to use tissue, I don't care if I spread disease.....etc......

    There is no excuse.

Grow up, learn some common decency and stop this revolting habit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,073 ✭✭✭✭Terry

I typed out a reply to that, but I would probably have to ban myself for asking such a question.
