Can you help me identify an E46 part?

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify what part #4 is in the attached link, it just says it's a bush in the key below:-

I've got a oil leak coming from the gasket between the oil filter manafold and the engine block, it seems to leak more when the engine is cold than when it's running... I am going to take off the oil filter manafold, clean everything down, put in a new gasket ( with a nice thin coating of black silicone on it ) and torque everything back up.. Does that sound ok? Has anyone else with an E46 had to do this?

i'm going to be very careful with the black silicone ( use very little of it ), as i don't want any of it ( dry or wet ) going into the oil system. I have found it very good in the past whe i've used it on other cars ( mainly on water pumps / thermostats )...

Not sure, but it looks like either a non return valve or a pressure relief valve.

Thanks Mcnab, i was thinking it might be some sort of one way valve...

I'm going to replace the gasket, part #6 in the link below:-

I was thinkig of using a minimal amount of black silicone on it, just to be sure to be sure. Was going to be carefull that none gets into the oil system. The Loctite Blacksilicone I have is high temperature and is rated for oil, normally used for timing chain cover gaskets ect...

I've had mixed optionions from people in work, some for some agains. I'll know when i take the old one appart whether there was anything special on it. Also the gasket is a paper gasket, but quite tick, like a thin carboard.

Can you help me identify an E46 part?
