I'd gladly accept it.. This whole anti-British/"800 years" rubbish has no impact on me - never has. Move on people!

look at you up there on your high horse. anytime anyone rejects anything from Britain it must be because of the narrow mindedness of the IRA loving attitude. jesus, get over yourself
So would you accept the French equivalent then? Legion de Honour or some such I think they call it.

Is it a refusal to accept any kind of recognition from anyone that people are against, or is it just that a foreign country wants to bestow an honour and they are then offended that their own country didn't see fit to already give them a similar form of recognition and they feel ignored?
Mostly looks to be just because of the actual country handing out the honour that is the problem though.

Also Bono's award is not coming from the Queen or even Blair, it is from the British ambassador to Ireland who made the recommendation and he could well have been prompted to come up with the idea from Bertie. After all he has to then give permission for Bono to accept the thing anyway.

I'd accept it and then walk away just as she was about to hand me whatever papers or trophies come with it. just for the craic.

Yep. I'd accept it and just as the queen is lowering the sword over my shoulder, I'll pretend to have a twitch and jump up in the air, thus causing her to cut my arm off. (I'm fairly sure they grow back). Then I'd wave my stump around while screaming and spraying blood all over the media who are there to witness the event. Now that would make interesting headlines of a tuesday morning.

Yeah, I'd accept. I've yet to see a valid reason not to on this thread.

because it's fairly pointless and has absolutely no meaning in the real world?

Except I'd get to refer to myself as a knight which would probably pad out my CV a bit. I know being a knight doesn't have the perks it used to but I still don't see anything on here that would convince me not to accept it. It may not do anything but awards for other things don't make you better at them. If, by some bizarre twist of fate, I go on to win an Oscar, I wouldn't see the fact that it doesn't do anything in life as a reason to turn it down.

Is there any real point or meaning in the real world to receiving an Oscar, a sports personality of the year or even employee of the month type awards? They are all just a recognition that someone else thought what you did over the previous while was pretty good and that other people should try to do as well as you just did.

an oscar will get you more movie work, thereby earning you more money.

sports personality of the year. well, maybe a few more endorsment deals.

Knight. i can't really think of anything.

I voted yes but it would come with some conditions like no queen licking or sponge bathing.

Not pointless at all as we have now established that you are at least being consistent in your refusal which I doubt anyone has a problem with.

I suspect that if the title of the poll was not referring to an honor from the UK that the results would have slightly less no votes in it though.

you can buy the title "Lord". always been that way. Lords were always the rich people in britain. you had to be a land owner to beconme a lord. it's all about the money. can't see pete doherty throwing away his crack money on a title.

    Not that expensive really:

    Clicky

For a mere £195 I might take a couple of lordships.

Edit: Had a bit more of a look around that page and it seem that you can buy a hereditary title for £995 which comes with it's own bit of land as well. You won't be able to build a castle on the land though as it is only 20cm x 20cm in size. :D

you wouldn't piss me off. not that i count or anything. just saying.

Me neither. Pighead would be happy to congratulate Sir Pornnapster. The honour and prestige associated with the Honour would give a much needed boost to that shithole of a County that calls itself Cavan.

    No chance.

Not from Britain (a state that has committed genocide and terrible war crimes in Ireland and never apologised or recognised them) nor from any other state.

Damn right I'd accept. If I done something worthy of an honour I'd accept. I'd accept a Knighthood from England, a Legion d'Honneur from France and money from the US.
Nearly every country has a national honour it's nothing short of disappointing that we don't have one. There was a great cartoon in one of the papers last week. Bono beside his wall of honours; knighthood, legion d'honneur, the one he got from Nelson Mandela and a brick from Ireland. Cos it seems thats all he ever gets here no acknowledgement for his music or his charity work and an awful lot of hypocrisy. If everybody on these boards had E250m they'd put it in the country where they'd pay the least tax but when he does it b1tch, b1tch, b1tch

I wouldn't bow to the queen of England just so I could call myself Sir. Its pointless.

he can put his money where he likes but if he doesnt want to pay taxes here then he should STFU about what Ireland does with tax money

In fact he still pays large ammounts of tax here as they only moved part of the U2 empire abroad and I belive he's telling every other country where they should put their money so why not us. Not saying he isn't an annoying twerp at times though:rolleyes:

My point is your getting your honour from England and it just so happens the head of state in England is the Queen but the honour comes from the people of England. It's just an anti-English thing IMO if a country sees fit to honour for something I've done in their country then IMO it'd be rude to reject it.

Well no im a paddy so theres no way i'd like to get knighted by the Queen of England it contradicts everything us Irish people stand for!!

That's not a problem then as Bono, and yourself if you were to get one, would get the award from the British ambassador to Ireland and wouldn't need to go anywhere near the Queen.

What is it exactly then that the Irish stand for then, "hate" everything with any association with England apart from the premiership?

Are you aware that 'Paddy' is a term of racial abuse?

Perhaps that's something else Irish people stand for...

There are over three quarters of a million Irish-born people living in England. That's just shy of 1,000 Irish people for every year of colonisation. I wonder what they stand for, eh?
