That's not a problem then as Bono, and yourself if you were to get one, would get the award from the British ambassador to Ireland and wouldn't need to go anywhere near the Queen.

Don't be so pedantic. The Queen herself might not actually come over to Ireland to personally bestow whatever it is they bestow, but it's still bestowed in the Her name.

What is it exactly then that the Irish stand for then, "hate" everything with any association with England apart from the premiership?

Well maybe because we live in a Republic, we might not be too enamoured with the whole monarchy thing, especially when you throw in everything that was done here in that monarchy's name.

She is just the person handing out the awards though and has nothing to do with deciding who gets them, apart from the odd one or two she'll give out to her personal staff. It's just the same as if she were the "celebrity" handing out awards at the Oscars or something. The award is from whichever political party you have recently given a bunch of cash to, or wants to raise their profile a bit by dish out awards to certain celebrities, but most of the minor awards are from local communities nominating someone that has done some good locally for them. But you'll never hear about them apart from the odd dinner lady that they pick out each year to put in the papers for their 15 minutes of fame.

Like I said then, it is a case of hate everything English just for the sake of it then? Or have you been oppressed recently?

No, I would be flattered by the offer, but I wouldn't accept.

Really? Which one of the ten chivalric orders does that apply to? Specifically?

What a lovely sentiment, just some old biddy handing out random awards to passersby and whoever she is told, huh?

Of course there is absolutely no symbolism involved in getting one of these "awards", that sees one accepting the honour of "Knight Commanding of the Order of the British Empire".

No it's not. If you got an Oscar you would be recieving recognition from your peers. Me and Old Queen Liz are far from peers and that's the way I'd like to keep it thank you very much.

Oh my dear child, it has nothing to do with "hate". To paraphrase the late FR. Faul, I'm Irish, I love the British, they just have no place running my country.

Me personally? Well I had to recently go up to Contae Ard Mhacha for the day. Now in order to feed myself while in Contae Ard Mhacha I had to go through the hassle of changing a measly 50 euro to sterling because only the big stores take euro and even then they charge for the privilege.

Now we have socially and culturally moved on since the days when Redcoats were burning us out of our homes and poring tar and feathers on us for the craic. But it seems to me at least that the forms of oppression may also have moved on with the cultural and social changes, to a more limited and benign form maybe?

But why ask me? Why not ask the family of Michael McIlveen, who was kicked to death by loyal subjects of the Queen, if they are oppressed?

    1) As a paddy living in the UK, I'd be honoured to accept a knighthood

    2) Bono is a knob

    3) There's a lot of knobs on here who fancy themselves as part-time rebels ("man I bleedin hate that burd, y'know the Queen. Bleedin' Brits. Here, Maggot, what score was the man utd game today?")

    Thank you, that is all.

Embarassing, aren't they? :( Hypocrites, I believe, is the term used here! :)

Personally I wouldn't accept one. I like to think I'd be thankful that whatever I'd done had been recognized, though.

I'd be honoured to get a knighthood.

And I didn't see it mentioned but as I'm Irish, I wouldn't be able to apply the 'sir' to my name as it only applies to British nationals AFAIK.

Well a solid NO from me anyways.

Maybe if we had a united Ireland and the majority of Irish people in Ireland could speak Irish fluiently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭wow sierra

I wouldn't accept one either as an Irish person - don't think I would even if I was English - I think the whole Monarchy thing is a bit dated.

Mind you I needn't worry - I haven't had the talent, commitment or initiative to do anything that would merit a knighthood. Maybe we should be more concerned with doing something great with our lives that might merit a knighthood or some such award, rather than worrying about whether we'd accept one.

And so ends my "thought for the day":) :)
