Ok, just got a new mp3 player, and it can play videos too, but they need to be SMV. Unfortunately, the software supplied to conver files just gives me error messages no matter what I try to convert. I've since tried to download other coverters, but all of them give me error messages.

If anyone has any experience here, I'd be very happy if you could help me out.

i can only asssume that the converter you have works,
but it doesnt support the format your putting in.
there are a few results on google for this type of format and various converters, with many people reporting the same issue.

that would suggest everyones converter is the same tool with a different interface.

im going to assume a couple of things here -
your converting an avi to smv, and you downloaded that avi from the web.

first thing i would suggest is convert your audio to cbr and remux
read the bit here about extracting and remuxing avis with vdub
    http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/virtualdub_procedures.htm
once youve done that try to convert to smv again

if that doesnt work, try extracting the video to an uncompressed avi and then convert to smv

if the above doesnt work, try mpeg 1 and 2 to smv and so on.

this is probably too much hassle for something thats going to break in a few days - aldi mp3 player? = glass screen = crack.
    but best of luck.
