Dual Layer DVD's?

    Hi Folks,

    My DVD-writer writes to DVD+R DL according to the screenshot (see attachment) taken with VSO Inspector (a freeware to tell you details about your DVD/CD drives and the actual discs if there is one inserted). The reason I am asking is I usually use blank 4.7GB DVD's for backup but I find these no longer suffice.

    Firstly some of my files will no longer fit onto a standard DVD-5 DVD+/-R or RW with 4.7GB Capacity. When I last formatted the PC I was able to reload my files from the blank DVD's I had them backed upto. But certain grouping of files like my Itunes folder & the "My Pictures" folder have now grown to over 6.5GB and I would like to be able to burn them to a dual-layer DVD for easy access later should anything go wrong.

    I use Sonic Record Now which came my with my Dell and it is good for burning Music to Cd's and backing up data to blank DVD's, I wonder will this work with Dual-Layer DVD's?? I also have CDBurnerXP Pro 3, the freeware for burning disks. If anybody here knows if either of these work on Dual-layer post it up.

    What are the opinion's of the board of Dual-layer DVD's and how expensive are they? I have looked into them and they seem to be a ball-park figure of around €5 per disc < Well worth it if it saves hours of ripping Music to Itunes and all the mess of naming them and sorting out Artwork etc.

    And lastly I will be in Cork City tomorrow so if anybody here knows anywhere there they can be got cheaply I would appreciate it.

    Stick to DVD+R DL (DVD-R DL is unreliable).

    Don't use cheap DVD+R DL stick to quality brands like Verbatim. DL discs are generally more expensive than single layer discs.

    The Sonic Record Now software probably supports it I don't use it myself but I would hazard a guess it auto detects the type of media when you go to burn a disc. You should be able to tell by the file size limit as with a DL disc it should be around 8GB.

    Both Nero & CopyToDVD support writing to DL media if Sonic doesn't work out.

    As for buying locally no idea, Komplett & SVP is where to I get them on-line when I need to.

    (Getting an external hard drive is a much faster & easier method of data backup then copying onto several discs, especially as burning to DL takes longer than SL discs.)
