Help with Philips 5350H - not playing DVDs

Hi, I am hoping some one here can help me. I bought a Philips 5350H HDD DVD recorder yesterday. Got it home and set it up - not happy with picture quality but I am sure I can tweak it to get the channels tuned in better. The big problem is that it won’t play DVDs. I put a DVD in the tray - closed it and expected the DVD to start. Nothing happened. Read the manual and followed the instructions exactly still no joy. I hit the HDD-Browser button, selected the Disk Tray sources, and then got a message to say the system was reading the disk. It the showed me a list of tracks but I am unable to play any of them. Nothing happens when I hit the play or ok buttons. Tried 4 different DVDs and a couple of CD - no joy. So before I bring the machine back is there something silly that I am doing?

    Thanks

...don't know much bout this stuff the only thing I'd ask is if the DVDs/CDs are originals. Maybe the player won't play +r, or -r - or something like that!

And to really insult your intelligence  make sure that you are playing "proper" DVDs and not DIvX/xVid etc........

But to be honest as you know yesel this is very dodge. The thing should just play whatever you throw at it.

I have had two Philips recordable DVD players and both broke down within a couple of uses. The first one they replaced and the second time they gave me a refund. I have heard of other people who had similar problems with recordable dvd players from Philips and Pye. Now I have a ordinary (non-recordable) dvd player and sky+.

I had the same trouble with a Philips DR725 and from what I've read on the net it seems to be a common problem with philips players/recorders. Went through 2 of then and a Philips 3450 (seemed very buggy) before giving up and going with a sony (not as good timeslip functions etc. but hopefuly more reliable!).
