    Hi All,

Just wondering if any of you are using either of FreeNAS or OpenFiler and if so what are your thoughts?

I am building a NAS and am in two minds as to which software to use to manage the disks. FreeNAS seems to be getting a lot of good press, but I would be interested in hearing from any of you that have used it in anger!

Also, the machine I am putting all the disk into is really to good to be used as a mere NAS, so I am probably going to run the NAS as a vmware appliance on the box and add more appliances over time. Again, any thoughts or experiences welcome!

    Tx,
    Jab

freeNAS is great for what it is, a lightweight no-nonsense NAS server. However if you have a machine running as a NAS server you will no doubt want to add extra facilites such as web-based bittorrent clients, music streaming etc etc.

My vote for handiness is clarkconnect. You want the community version. Its lightweight and comes out of the box with a choice of two Web-Based configuration programs. It comes with a rake of features and the support from the forums is great. Its a great way to get a stable, secure (hehe opening can of worms there) linux server up and running even if you are a complete novice to the world of /.

Nowadays I use debian, but a lot of the configuration tricks I learned from clarkconnect.
