That's complete bs.
The reason the scorpion goes "mad" is because the alcohol burns it, so it thinks it's an enemy and attacks. The reason it dies is due to the alcohol iirc, but scorpions are immune to their own venom, so they can't "sting themselves to death" - unless they stabbed themselves to death with the stinger. Venom'd have no impact on it.

Same goes for the "scorpion in a ring of fire" thing, where it would allegedly sting themselves to death aswell. It's pretty much the same thing, except the heat kills them.

I don't think that's exactly true. I'm pretty sure its the other way around, the confusion lies in the fact that its the male that looks after the offspring rather than the female.
