Putting in a cupboard under my stairs......

    A friend pointed out recently that even though we have an understairs toilet in our house, there is still [hopefully] a lot of unused space under the stairs.

    Seemingly this is becoming a popular weekend project and can become a handy new storage space in your home & living in a cramped 3 bed semi-detached there is a serious lack of space - ie. I don't even have a convenient place for the bloody Hoover.....:(

    - I was wondering if anyone has ever done this & was basically looking for advice on maximising the space gained, what sort of door to fit & whether this door can be made very discreet/hidden etc. etc.

    I have an understairs toilet as I mentioned but I don't think there is much accompanying junk in there - one water pipe servicing the toilet cistern. Basically any suggestions in advance of cutting into that Plasterboard with my trusty hole saw would be welcome :D

    I like the picture there with the pull out drawers - that would be a very efficient place to store shoes etc, you'd have to get them custom made to be deep enough though I suppose. Interested in ideas for this too.

    I have seen this done where the door is fitted flush with a push to open/close magnetic catch. Very neat looking. If the space is only going to be used for hoover , shoes etc then you could line the space inside with cheap ply.

    Hey Folks - thanks for the replies - am going to try put in a flush fit door - will go to B&Q et al and see what catches/handles are available......
