    I am trying to delete/format my USB key and i am getting a write protected error, i have to remove write protection of use another disk. There are no switches or buttons on the key so its not 'locked'

    I have Win XP, how can i remove the write protection?
    Its a -Pretec 01GB USB Device

    Did any software come with it to allow you to unlock or format it perhaps besides Windows?

    edit: Think I found your solution located here

    No software, just the key :o

    I actually dont have 'StorageDevicePolicies' at that path ... searched for it too and still found nothing. Had a look elsewhere (looking for something obvious) and found nothing.

    Here is what to do if you are prepared to lose your info ....

    Shut down the PC, rebooted press F8 to go to Safe Mode.
    Start -> Run
    Type in CMD, hit OK.
    Type in format ?: (? is the drive letter) and hit enter.
    Let it go to 100% and then shut down.
    Reboot normally and you have your key back.
