Locking down Belkin Wireless Router. HeLP!

    OK I have a Belkin wireless router installed on my PC and initially I set the security by limiting the no of IP addresses. Ok this didnt work!

    So now, I have gone into the security setting on the router software and set the security to be WPA-PSK (no server) and set a PSK.

    On the laptop client side (Belkin wireless card) I have gone into the security section and set the Enable WPA Encryption and entered the PSK (shared key) as above.

    When I reboot, the wireless client cannot connect to the network. It also does not acquire an IP address that I recognise...it picks up a 169.254 address??

    PC connected to belkin router is running XP as is the laptop. Am I missing something?? Please help. Is there an easier way to lock down the wireless router?? I had 2 clients connecting illegally so I must get this sorted out!! Thanks in advance for any help!!

    The 169.254 address is perfectly normal - a network interface will assign itself a 169.254 address if it doesn't get a response to it's request for an IP address.

    The most likely reason for your problem is that you mistyped the passphrase. You don't need a complicated random string to make your passphrase secure - a simple sentence like "You don't need a complicated random string" will do the job quite nicely.

    Foxwood thanks!!! I had used a WORD instead of a phrase and apparently that must be the key to it..as soon as i changed from a long word to a phrase, it logged in like a lamb :D
