How well can dogs see in the dark?

I always assumed dogs could see quite well in the dark but I notice my doberman puppies are a lot more anxious if I take them for a walk in fading light than they are during daylight. I just thought darkness does effect dogs - at least they don't seem to have the same confidence as cats in the dark?

This link says a lot about it.

But I assume if there is no light at all - as in if the dog is kept in a garage with no windows at night - the dog can't see squat.

Not too sure about what dogs see at night, they are probably excited or the different smells of animals that come out at night.
