Maybe a stupid question... but just another one of "those things" I'm trying to work out :P

How does 999/112 work in Ireland? There's a centre in each city which covers city and surrounding areas? There's one general centre in Dublin? When you ring from a landline they detect where you're calling from and this is why you just need to give streetname or whatever? They do the same with mobiles based on the phone masts?

Normally I believe the emergency service operator just uses the same system to trace a phone number, like a caller ID though maybe more advanced. I believe the emergency lines have their own circuits that normal phone traffic cannot access. Some of your questions answered, not sure about the rest.
