Sorry julep, no offence here but this is one other thing that gets on my tits. Constant "simpsons/family guy/whatever cartoons popular right now" quoting. It seems like alot of people here dont have much of a sense of humour of thier own and are content to just quote cartoons/tv shows ad nauseam in place of any actual wit. "LOL! SLEEPYS LAW!" Yeah. Hi-bleedin-larious.
that went right over your head, didn't it?

it was a dig a the exact thing you are saying bugs you.

Retards who keep posting "this thread belongs here *link* tbh". Your retarded, tbh. Helping an AH poster along to the Satellite forum if he posts a skydigital related query- grand, they can help him better. Country folk demanding all threads be moved because they contain the word Dublin in them=spas.

The ban on anything that aint politically correct.

People thinking that the Catholic church runs this country, and who complain about the awful awful effect that an organisation that has less influence over this country than the Malaysian Communist Party has had on their lives.

People who act like mods. Jesus Christ, if your that desperate either suggest a forum and become mod or just set up your own poxy message board

People who turn interesting debates on drugs, travellers and immigration into sh1t by pretending they know what theyre talking about

    The ban on personal abuse.

    Hate:
People who start threads like this as thinly veiled vehicles for their latest whinge.
    Also (and unrelated)
Keyboard-cowards who are very big behind a moniker they *think* cant be traced.

    Like:
Tracing keyboard-cowards and getting *right* in their faces...
Making cameo's as it makes Beat happy. :)
Most of the rest of it though thats not that suprising, if I didnt like it I'd change it.

Not something I'd google off the top of my head.

I like the fact that boards can be like reading a good mag sometimes.

I dislike the puppy on the search engine please turn it into something else.

    Likes:

    1. The broad range of information which can be found.

    2. Reading different points of view on various subjects.

    3. The sense of community.

    4. The banter.

    5. Meeting new and interesting people, even if it's only online.

    6. Mods who do their job efficiently and fairly. (Thank you)

    Dislikes:

    1. The way some posters make condescending remarks if you
don’t agree with their point of view.

    2. The way some posters take a stand on an issue/debate
based on their general ideological outlook, rather than looking
at the particular pros/cons of an issue/debate in an objective
    way.

    3. Mods who abuse their power and act like bullys. Especially
when they contribute to a thread and then pick on a poster
who they feel has slighted their ego by disagreeing with them
too articulately. (Every internet forum has them. I just hope
the offenders on here will be dealt with eventually)

    4. Anybody in an mod/admin position who makes veiled threats
about tracing posters ip addresses and interacting with them in
a physical way. Whatever slight or offense a poster
may give in an internet forum, it is just that, an internet
forum. Even if the person in power has no intention of acting
on such a threat, the threat itself is an act of intimidation and an abuse
of power, and shouldn't be tolerated on any forum.

I havn't been around too long, but all in all the likes outweigh the dislikes for now.

If you're referring to what DeVore said, I highly doubt he meant he was going to trace a user with the intent of a attacking them physically.

    Now for the sake of contributing;

    What I like about boards:

    - The huge number of people on boards makes for vastly differing opinions, and its nice to come on and read some of them (once they're well constructed arguments)

    - The range of topics and information available. Anything you're looking for information on you'll generally find, or if you've a question you can ask and receive quality informative responses to it.
Also, there's lots of great advice available. PI for example is packed with good advice and I'd imagine over the course of time that forum has helped an awful lot of people.

    - The heirarchy of control. The vast exapanse of the structured control system (mods -> cmods ->smods -> admins ) keeps the place in good order and given the size of the site, the place would be chaotic without it. Also means that if you've a problem with someone, there'll always be a superior to take it up with should a conflict not get resolved by the two involved. Except for Admins, if you've a problem with them then you should know where to go.

    -The banter and humour.

    - The range of characters and personalities on boards. Keeps things interesting. That includes Pighead, I don't see why people are giving out about him.

    - The sense of community and the fact its a local site (though we've many welcome users from abroad also).

    - Its a great way to kill time.

    - The people. Though I never came here with the intention of meeting people really, boards has introduced me to some great ones and one in particular whos become a substantial part of my life. Theres loads of cool people around who are more than willing to help/offer their advice on a subject or have a bit of banter when there's nothing else to do (or when they're working!you bums!)

    - Theres a welcoming atmosphere for newer users. I've checked out a load of fora and there tends to be a lot of perceived superiority by users with higher postcounts towards those with relatively few and the opinions of newer users aren't taken seriously. I haven't seen this on boards.

Thats just a few off the top of my head.
    Then theres

    What I dislike about boards:

    - Whingers. Theres some people out there who are never satisfied and constantly seem like they want to tell the whole world about it.

    - Idiots. With there being so many people on this site, theres bound to be a few of them but some of them p1ss me off on a continual basis. Its usually the ones who are dumb and ignorant that get to me though. For example those that ask ridiculous questions in serious-toned threads such as "who would win in a fight, a sumo wrestler or someone suffering from anorexia" in a thread regarding weight/weight issues etc.

    - txtspk. Theres a full keyboard sitting infront of them and no limit to how much they may enter in a message, but theres still some who are compelled to write sh1te like "i wz gn 2 d prk d othr day n i lukd up in2 d sky n saw a brd!!!" and then try to justify it with "well you can read it can't you so I don't see the problem" or "I'll write how I want thanks". Ignorant b*stards.

    - The PC Brigade. Theres a few of them in the brigade, and though they don't bother me when it comes to a lot of topics, anything un-pc and they're jumping down users throats and slurring accusations of racism/ageism etc. The bandwagon effect applies here 'cause as soon as one of them starts up, a load more usually do.

    - Spammers. Its annoying that companies feel they can try and use this local community forum as an advertising place.

    - BoardTracker. I won't get into it but I don't like that thing at all at all.

    - The strictness of the personal abuse rule. I mean, the line is drawn pretty low at what can and can't be said out of The Thunderdome. Someone got banned for calling another user a muppet (and rightly so as far as I'm concerned given what the user had said to be called a muppet) recently which I thought was absolutely OTT.

    - The overuse of smilies.

    - People who register duplicate accounts after being sitebanned.

I'm sure theres more..if there's anything else I'll add to it.

There is something innately great about tying so many different minds together based on opinion.
The fact that whether we are kids of the 70's, 80's or 90's we all seem to be united by a connection to Irish society.
There are some laugh out loud frigging hilarious one-liners knocking about that frequently leave me laughing out my nose at work for trying to hold it in. Also when someone has a problem there is a pool of experience to call on, like with technical problems, personal issues, anything like that. There is always someone willing to go the extra mile to help someone out.
It is an interesting social mirror, relationships burgeon here that would not in reality, and what we have lost in communicating with each other whilst walking down the street, we can now replace it with online BBS's like this one, with like-minded people and those who think you're crazy alike. Based on about 15 replies to a current affairs thread, you can generally figure out the mood of the country.

If some mods(not all) took a step back and stopped being so power hungry boards would be a fantastic forum, the main reason people are here is because its irish

Likes - the people and their input,

Dislikes - new search(a step back) , loosing the old search function has lessened my enjoyment of Boards
For example when you are just browsing the New Post function was great to see what was being discussed in all the forums in real time, now you get to to see what was posted 4-8 hours ago, in some cases the thread has already died were-as with the old(better) search function you can engage in the discussion as it is expanding (not sure if I am making sense) and the people involved are still around.
If you want this now you have to search all the different sections and subsections individually, and more than likely I will miss some topics in sections I only have a fleeting interest in because its a pain looking through them all!!!!

Why have a rolleyes:rolleyes: smilie, if you can get banned for posting it?

Why have a message board that allows posts if you can get banned for using them?

And why not list these mods and the reasons. If you do so without making fun or name calling (ie. respectful) I'm sure no-one would mind.

Dislikes: People who have all the answers but won't share them.

Ya know, Fighting Irish, you could make your life so much brighter by requesting a siteban.

Then you wouldn't have to put up with this oppressive dictatorship and its power hungry henchmen any longer.

Dislikes: FI's continued failure to PM an smod or admin and end his suffering.
