Eh, no. What then would the point of moderators be, if not to enforce the forum rules?

I mean when a thread topic is related to the forum it is posted in, but it could also be related to another sub forum, why not let the poster decide rather than let people complain and make a mod move the thread to the other sub forum?

is there a specific thread you are talking about of is it just in general?

Well I am not a fan of the excitable people who get all excited on boards. They are like wittering little sheep who just post in some bizzare way of having found a place where they feel accepted. What they don't realise is that they are in the minority and have no concept of how others percieve them. Still if it makes them happy! Though it is worth noting that they tend to get over it after about 1 year.

What I do like is when Logic1/aka logic_away posts and how boards is a good resource for help and information. Long may the help continue.

Ive seen a few of them. 'More suited to here' being the reason to move. But I think it should be the mod's choice at the end of the day.

What do I like about boards?
Well its a fantastic resource for just about anything really, I tend to find the Sattelite, Tech and Mobile Phone forums quite helpful with most issues I may encounter. I do as my fellow boardsies do and help out where I can.

I also love the community that has built up here.

What do I not like about boards, the fact that it can be as slow as tar (I know the powers-that-be are working on it) and the fact that the search feature never works because it tends to rape the server resources at times (bloody vBulletin, ye should have used Invision Powerboards).

actually i hate to see other posters degrading other posters over text speak.

I dont like it myself but i mean when its one word in a whole sentence e.g 'u' instead of 'you' and they start that ****e

"oh my god i cannot read that text speak learn to write properly".

    wtf???????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭iFight

Agreed, I don't mind people using u, but I do get annoyed at full sentances in txt spk, I find it really hard to read.

I like the sense of community here. In most cases I get treated well, unlike on another board which I won't name. I also like the Irish connection - the internet is effectively American otherwise. I obviously like boards enough to spend about 4 hours a day on here - well I've nothing better to do!

I don't like that searching has been disabled and don't like the slow response times but on the other hand it's probably one or the other.

    Spell properly ffs ;)

Boards is a great resource, good craic and funny most of the time. And Kernel and Pighead, nice blokes.

Don't like the bandwagon element though, like when one person complains about something, they set everyone off complaining. For eg, someone gives out about a thread, said thread is immediately destroyed by 9/10 posters moaning about the standard of boards falling rapidly.

And I hate Bleu Note Cafe spammers.

I'm gettin sick of trying to express an opinion only to have someone quote me, take me out of context and jump down my throat basically. I always try to answer other posts with consideration rather than use it as an opportunity to jump on my soap box! For example for this reason I'm never going back into the Pets and Animals category - they're staunch animal activists masquarading as boardsies, you'd swear I had told them I was off to drown some puppies the way they reacted to me the last time I posted there - and I only posted suggesting an OP could let her dogs have 1 litter before neutering them since the particular dog was so in demand. It's a lose lose situation.

    I don't like:
-The server issues (every site has them I know, but not as frequently as this one)
    -The sig rules constantly changing

Apart from that though, this place is great!

*People who are willing to give up their time to offer advice with technical/personal problems.
*There are some genuinley funny people on the forums, and others who I would imagine are truly kind and caring in real life.
*Makes the day go a little quicker.
*Excellent place to hear about bargins, music, films etc.

    Dislikes:

*The "Holier than thou" attitude of one or two boardsters (possibly we are all guilty of this, but I can think of some people who tend to specialise in it).
*I think some bullying goes on.
*Finally, any text speak and the use of words like "nite" - ARGHHHH!

    ::Edit::

Daddio mentioned something about bandwaggons. I think that if a respected member of boards posts an opinion on some subject matter then you get a number of people following in the wake of their advice. I would imaging that these same people would offer exactly the opposite opinion if the same respected boardster had originally posted the opposite themselves. Often, because of this, I think that the public opinion towards a person/ their problem can be shapped by one opinion.

    The Good:

The sense of community here. A big plus IMHO, folk are willing to help each other out, PI being just one example off the top of my head.

Relevance. An local noticeboard, in the context of the internet at least, that reflects local opinion and issues, rather than being a watered down version of Americana. That's the nature of the 'net unfortunately, the dominance of US culture is inevitable and just the nature of the beast. Not always a bad thing, but it's nice to come home to boardsie...

Healthy (for the most part) moderation/control. There are two schools of thought on this. I cut my teeth on Usenet and the chaos that surrounds it, which while it allowed freedom of speech, also allowed an unacceptable signal/noise ratio. Look at PeoplesRepublicOfCork for a closer comparison and you'll see what I mean. This don't work. Boards may well appear to be over modded to the casual observer, but it works, and is necessary to maintain the quality of the whole.

No txt spk. That is all.

    The Bad:

The influx of muppets. With 75,000 (yeah right :p ) of ye talkin', there are going to be a fair percentage of idiots in the mix. What can you do? You can't ban someone for being thick, if they are not quite thick enough to break da roolz, but yet thick enough to be irritating. I reckon the boards experience is worth it, but I personally don't see a solution. Maybe there isn't one. Life is like that.

Server issues: In no way a reflection on those who give up personal time and resources to keep things running, but it does detract considerably from the site. It's easy to say "subscribe", and if I thought it would result in a tangible difference I'd do more than that. I realise that existing subs have probably kept the site alive, or at the very least have kept the advertising at bay, which is commendable in itself. I'd happily make a one off donation towards a new server,or whatever needs to be done and subscribe initially for a year as well, if a solution is mooted. There's talk of new hardware, but as I understand, no concrete plans are in place. I am talking off the cuff, as such a proposal may well be stickified somewhere, but if there was a wishlist, vis a vis "Look guys, projected traffic is x, and we need y to maintain acceptable performance. We have an income of z from subs, but we need Ω to make things happen", it would in my view bring home the message more forcefully, and also bring some clarity to the issues. If such information is available, I would love to see it. My suggestion is made with all sincerity btw.

Bandwagons. As a previous poster states, the noble tradition of hanging on coat-tails is alive and well on the internet, and of course boards. Feedback threads are a case in point. This is human nature. Shrug.

The Cuckoos Nest: Amp won't like to hear me dissing his baby, but I reckon it's an awful waste of processor power... Mind you, plenty of horny teenagers will differ with me on that, but if my beloved thunderdome can be criticised, what the hell :)

    The Ugly:

    "This page cannot be displayed."

    :p

All in all, a thumbs up, which given the popularity of this place, would seem to be the general opinion.

Sounds like a trolls charter :)
The easiest way to do it is let the poster decide, if it is relevant to that forum leave it, the people who complain can put up with it

    LIKE:
I like the community feel to this site.
I like that you can seek advice from REAL people on topics such as education, accommodation, motors, computers, etc.
I like that you can share your experience's and opinions with people, and can learn a little from their real life experiences too.

    DISLIKE:
The way newbies are sneered at by some of the long term users.
The cliques that are present on Boards.
The fact the Board tracker wont work for me, as the firewall thinks it contains adult content. (Although I am pretty sure that's not Boards fault - it still bugs me)

i dislike the way certin posters like fighting irish take offence every time they whinge and then get told by someone that its not going to change.

really, just be cuase you dont like something, doesnt mean that the other 74,999 other users around here dont.

what i dont like is the fact that 99% of complaining people cant back up their own arguments.

i also dislike people like fighting irish who complain that mods dont like 'constructive critisism', and yet they are the last people who ever do give it.
their version of constructive critisism is to complain and then say 'fix it'.

and they keep doing it. for me the definition of stupidity is to continue doing something a certain way, but expect different results each time.
    sound familiar fellas?

maybe try a new approach, and you might get different results.

I also hate how most mods on boards

    Most?
There are over 400 Mods on boards, do you know them all?
I only know a handful of that 400, most of them don't even bother with feedback.
its that they are trying to make people realise what things can be done to make things better

From my experience, when a poster comes up with a good idea which will help to make boards a better place it is always taken on board by the Admins and users alike.

    My second dislike:
Whingers who generalise without any hard facts to back up said comment.

I dont like that some of the mods seem to live a pathetic existance and seem to believe that they have a meaningful life moderating forums. Some of them take it waaaayyyyy too seriously and need to just BACK AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD!

EDIT: lookin back up one post..... WHO GIVES TWO SH1TS ABOUT CAPITALS AT THE START OF A SENTENCE? why do people on postboards think they are 1 upping people by correcting grammar? it doesnt make you better than anyone.

WHAM DOUBLE EDIT: the nerd terminology..... ie troll, flame ......
