It's a sad day for wildlife conservation because Steve really brought attention to how endangered some of them are.

It is ironic that he was killed by a stingray, Sky News said he is only the 20th person in the past 100 years to be killed by one. I read on a marine animals website that they don't attack as such, they usually sting in defence when they are stood on but a sting in the foot will not kill you, and a sting in the chest is usually fatal. My thinking is that he was probably either swimming too close to it or was handling it and it lashed out.

The thing that annoys me is that stingrays are going to get a bad name from a lot of people now because of this, particularly because Steve Irwin was almost thought of as being invincible by many people. But at least he had a quick death. It would have been worse if he had been attacked by a croc or alligator and been maimed or so badly injured that he couldn't do his job.

RIP Steve, I thought you were brilliant!

Apparently its only the 3rd reported death by Stingray in Austrailian histroy. Very unlucky after all the antics with venomous snakes and killer crocs. People will probably become nervous while snorkelling above stingrays from now on...

RIP Steve & My condolence's to his familly and friends.

Im glad at least it was quick.
I was very surprised to hear it was a stingray, usually such placid creatures. Ive touched and rubbed many of them, never once showed agression.

A sad loss of an excellent campaigner, educator, enviromentalist and all-round good guy.

The dangers of his job finally caught up with him. I thought he was great bu still thought dangling his 2 month old baby in front on a 13 foot croc was madness.
    RIP Steve.

Some would say the same about letting the family dog in the house with kids. He felt he knew what he was doing.

He was a little, uhm, overenthusiastic for me when it came to interacting with the crocodiles he liked so much, but what he did for environmental conservation, endangered species and wildlife awareness was immeasurable. I think that guy must have turned an entire generation of kids onto the idea of wildlife education and conservation. He really was a singular public figure. What young age to die, 44. I feel for his wife and children.

Its sad how he was killed by a normally peaceful stingray after being with some of the most aggresive animals in the world.

Wikipedia has some rather in-depth info on it. The Oz police viewed the tape of his death (it was caught on camera) and concluded that the stingray felt threatened because Steve was behind it and a cameraman was in front of it. Apparently the barb pierced his heart, so that's usually going to be fatal regardless of what caused it. Is the sting an actual toxin, or is it an electrical thing or perhaps it's just a spike?

    RIP mate.

It is venomus, although according to the BBC...

"while painful, stingray venom is rarely lethal and it would have been the wound caused by the barb itself, which could measure up to 20cm long, which proved fatal."

My wife and I were very sad to hear of Steve's passing. She and I were both teary eyed this morning watching Sky news.

It's a testament to the man's life that two strangers who have never met him before could be so emotionally affected by his passing.

He will be missed, but his shows will continue to warm our hearts forever.

A great aussie and an inspiration to all.

Are you seriously taking the p1ss. Can you not understand that a father of two is dead. Do you understand that. His wife and children are now without him and all you can do is make a comment like that. Are you actually THAT....i don't even have words. MY GOD. imagine how you'd feel if someone said that about someone close to you. And don't give me bullsh1t about not saying it to his family....that you would even think that is horrifying........

More on topic:RIP Steve, a great father and husband by all accounts and a good man for the invironment.
