    Yes definitly....

Maybe just with less lethal weapons though because we all know gardai have a tendency to shoot each other...

I recon they should have tazers though.

Kind of a mute arguement that as the regular UK police aren't armed either, just like ours aren't.
Ok so noone should have guns. At all. Ever.

Funnily enough, I'm suprised no one has mentioned Abbeylara yet.

The OP mentioned it on page 1.

It was the Emergency Response Unit that shot that chap was it not? I guess they are part of the Gardai though.

I'm from Belfast and am used to seeing the armed PSNI and to be honest i can't take the Gardai as seriously partly due to the fact they are unarmed.
I take it you feel the same way about the police on the 'mainland'?

I probably wouldnt like to see them armed, it would bring out armed criminals so wed be in a worse off state as now. Maybe less than lethal weapons, like tazers as mentioned.
But if it came to it, I would trust the gardai with guns.

There's already loads of armed criminals and sod all armed Guards. There's no deterant. If you're caught, you get a brief prison sentence. If cops were armed here, it might make criminals thinh twice about guns, if they thought there was a chance of being gunned down instead of arrested. They all carry them for use against unarmed people. If someone was shooting back, I wonder how hard they'd be.

Good point, never really thought of that. Still id rather see guards with tazers.

    Only in America fokes

Maybe if they allowed guns, instead of only having the option of staying in or going to the pub on the weekend we could do THIS

    EDIT: or THIS

Yes I do, also the armoured vans we have in Northern Ireland add a more intimidating face to the PSNI.

Well, I thought the PSNI went on a big cuddley charm offensive since they switched from being the RUC. All baseball caps and press photo-ops talking to small kiddies.

Most Sarasan patrols have turned back to regular 'jam-sandwich' patrols acording to my sources up there. When was the last time you were back home? Things seem to be normalising up in auld Norn-Iron as this was the first year in living memory that the British Army weren't involved with policing the activity around the glorious twelfth.

Well, at least the PSNI don't have a fleet of Bradley-tanks on standby, as do the FBI.

    Abnormal situation = abnormal police.

the only thing that i would are the garda is inflatable hammers
less we forget the athy bank robbery the abbeyleix bank robbery and abbeylara, these 3 instances involve the so called elite members of the gardi, imagine what the rest of the ordinary
redneck thick as ****e gardi would be like with a gun

I don't think the Gardai are competent enough to hold arms as they stand, they would more than likely shoot themselves. The IQ level for the entrance exam would need to be increased.

Tbh I don't see why an armed corrupt garda would be any more scary than a non-corrupt garda.

What I wouldn't trust is the politicians and public to give their backing to armed gardaí when they need to use their firearms, there'd be mass outrage everytime they shot someone (as there is today).

agreed. arming those clowns with anything more than toothpicks would be asking for trouble

It goes without saying that the training for Guards needs to be improved dramatically. Guns or no guns. Nearly every encounter with a guard, good, bad or indifferent, leaves me massively unimpressed and doubting their capabilities.

    They already are armed.

They just work in plain clothes and unmarked cars when they carry guns.
