You'd expect Mavis Beacon to look like some feeble old lady typing away in a back room in the Department of Agriculture wouldnt you. That girl looks like Mr T's life-partner. Id say she could really kick ass.
She doesn't actually exist in real life. She's just a corporate creation like Ronald McDonald, The Burger King or Jesus.

Plus they must be using the same photo of the model for about 20 years now.

I dunno, just kinda picked it up as I went along really! I remember trying some of those Mavis Beacon things when I was a kid but I never really stuck with them and only really became a proficient typist when I was in college.

Funny, as soon as I tried typing this post, I've found my typing suffering, must be overly concious of what I'm doing!

Learned to type on an old Apple II before I started school. Because I just picked it up myself my technique is terrible, but I can still hit about 50 words a minute using just two fingers on each hand (plus thumbs)

about 10 years old , got the internet and started "chatting" in yahoo rooms n stuff, met a friend, 6 years typing to her 3-4 times a week drilled it into me. 4 years of college(programming) then kept in.

Heh. Next you'll be telling me theres no such thing as Santa. Gwan ewra dah.
    Er...just taught myself.
Could type about 40wpm without looking at the keyboard in about 1-2 years.. can do about 160wpm now..

So by my calculations, you must have written that in about... 8 seconds? Cool.

Learned in college way back when. We weren't allowed do computers until we had a Pitman Elementary cert (45 wpm).

Have 63 wpm with 96% accuracy at the moment - that's testing copy typing, on audio typing I'd be a bit faster.

Would love to learn how to type like this woman:

    funny story (and 100% true)

probably should go anonymous for this, but what the heck

Learned to type at a typing course run by the irish times about 8 years ago (it was a week long). The first day, I couldnt find the place, and rang my folks (who paid for it) at around 9.45 looking for directions (the course started at 9.30).

that night I got home and ended up taking acid with my mates. Minutes later my dad rang giving me sh!t and said I'd better be in on time the next day (even that he was going to ring the course and see was I there). After a night of madness I went in (on time) and still pretty whacked out of it. (he didnt ring the course)

The real fun started when we were doing typing exercises - we had to type stuff like "asdf jkl;" "qwer uiop" to get our fingers used to where the keys were. I was still pretty mad out of it, looking at all these non-words and trying to type them. It was freaking me out, and what was worse was that it was a "touch typing" course, so we werent allowed look at the screen or the keyboard (just the exercise sheet) when we were typing - and the teacher was pretty militant about this.

it was hellish - put me off tripping while learning to type for life!! Still though - I must've done okay, coz I can type now!!
