You'll need to clarify a few things here which are clonflicting.

Do you need to be checked in by 8.45 or in the airport by 8.45. There is a big difference. You could be waiting to check in for up to an hour depending on the number of desks open and the nature of the flight (charter etc..,)

Quick Park. Now 6 euro a day and not 5 euro.

    www.quickpark.ie

Chances are it will be full on a Saturday evening. No online booking anymore to just turn up on the day. Factor in a good 30 mins from arriving in the car park to arriving on the arrivals road to be safe.

As I said it depends on the nature of the flight. Scheduled flights (Ryanair, Aer Lingus, etc...,) would be a lot quicker than your avarage non scheduled charter flight. You'll have to make your own call on that one, as I've not idea of your destination. Aer Lingus have automated checkin and a baggage drop off point for checked in baggage, while Ryanair offer online checkin for those without baggage to check in - this can help greatly in avoiding queues.

In general there is no harm in arriving early, just if you do arrive early don't hang around the main terminal building before you are able to check in as it just adds to the over crowding. There are plenty of hotels in the airport where one can enjoy a drink, a coffee, a meal etc..,

They'll only open check in 3 hours before the flight, chance are your documentation says you need to be at the check in 3 hours before hand and not necessarily checked in. Anyhow the earlier your checked in the better choice of seat you will have when checking in, ie beside the emergancy exit where there is much more leg room.

It may not suit, but have you looked into the Aircoach service? Their Cork route takes them through Cashel if that's anywhere near you. Might save money and hassle with car parking. Just an option.

When your on Aircoach don't forget to ask the driver to switch on the Air conditioning. We spent 4 hours on the bus thinking it was broken until the bus stopped changed drivers & new driver then turned on A/c. We were roasted up until then. Just a bit of advice thats all.

Hi we went on hols last month and I printed off the route planner from the aa website - http://www.aaroadwatch.ie/routes/ It's quite good but I ended up getting off the motorway early for the long term parking facility (the map gives directions to the pick up area) - got a bit lost, discovered the QuickPark place was full and went back. What confused us is at one point you come to a roundabout and a signpost directs you to the QuickPark carpark (better sign than the other ones) to the right but the official dublin long term carpark is straighahead - 2nd exit on the roundabout. Hefty price though 8e a day... depressing to put your last euros in the payparking machine... :(

Why not leave at 3.00 that way your sure you'll be there. There's plenty of shopping in the airport once checked in and even a pre-flight drink to calm the nerves. Better safe than sorry.

    Shellie,

Take the advice offered to you here by those who have already responded...

There is nothing more stressful than arriving at the airport all hot and bothered because you didn't leave enough time for something.

Someone said that the carpark - airport leg is the worst. Remember getting to the carpark is the easy part. Finding a spot, waiting for a bus and arriving at the terminal can take up to 45 minutes (not joking), so factor that time in.

Travelling that distance from Tipp you need to allow for the possibility of a serious accident which may close an N road or even the M50 (not unheard of) and the need to find an alternative route.

Personally, I would rather be in the vacinity of the airport an hour ahead of check-in so that I can relax. Dublin Airport is one of the most stressful places on the planet, make it easy for yourself by preparing properly!

Enjoy your holiday and as you're travelling by Monarch, eat before boarding then sleep on the plane. The food is muck. And whoever said you should ask for the exit seats if you check in early, don't bother. Monarch charge (I think) €25 per person for those seats. Instead try for row 43 or higher. There's a few more inches on those rows, plus they board the back of the plane first.

Thanks Mike anything positive to say cos your scaring me here...Is the car park really far away from the terminals..Anytime we have been there we have gotten a lift and dropped at the door which was right handy. So not sure where the long term car park is.

It's just across the Swords road from the airport and well signposted, but it's just getting a spot and then the bus to the terminal that can be tricky. It's supposed to run every 10 minutes, but often they wait until they're full before leaving. The time flies (terrible pun) at this stage of your journey because there's lots going on, plus excitement/stress, so it's quite easy for it to take more than half an hour from the time you reach the airport area to the time you're actually in the terminal!

Sorry if I came across so negatively, I would hate for you to miss your check-in and some of your holiday for the sake of a little planning and forethought.

Another thought might be to drop everyone else and the bags at the dropoff zone at the terminal and then go park the car yourself. They won't be able to check you in, but they can keep a place in the queue while you park.

It's actually sad how awful the airport is in Dublin in comparison to other similarly busy airports (the big ones will always be nightmarish to get through).

The sooner a second and third terminal get built the better. Ryanair have a new boarding gate area thats a good 10 minutes walk from the rest of the A gates in order to fit them all in, which is ridiculous in this day and age. Can't wait for the day when Aer Rianta have been destroyed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 345 ✭✭starman100

I had to go into the Aer Rianta car park last week as Quickpark was full.

The Red zone was packed to the gills, very funny to see cars parked all over the place, on the grass verge, in the middle of roundabouts, anywhere and everywhere. Obviously people can't be bothered finding a proper spot. But then who can blame them - the place is like a maze, no proper signage at all. And the bus only picks up at one or two designated spots so you may face a long walk from the car to the bus stop.

Previous week I had managed to get into Quickpark, cheaper and smaller so easy to find the bus. Mind you, the surface is dog rough, lots of car and tyre rubber residue so watch out for the filth. I was wearing shorts and sandals after coming back from my holiers weekend before last and got soaked and muddied upon arriving in Dublin.

Then of course less than 2 weeks later we have today's weather :D .

But yeah, airport parking in Dublin is a bit like Beirut I reckon.

    Jaysus.....

its a frikken trip to Dublin.... not an expedition to Manaus by water boat and mule pack for crisssakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭Siogfinsceal

there are 2 carparks one is slightly before the airport and it is cheaper there is a shuttle bus that brings you to the airport once you have parked your car. wirh regard to how long it takes its best to leave earlier and that way you can get checked in in plenty of time. You wont be bored theres bars and stuff to wait in its better early than late!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭Siogfinsceal

i went to cork airport last year drove from kildare to avoid the hassle of dublin - much easier the electricity went but because the place was small they got us all on the plane on time, easy cheap parking etc

I'd say to leave Naas 2 seconds after you arrive there.

For a serious answer, you might want to give details. Will you be travelling by motor vehicle or by donkey? (well you are coming from Naas)
