Id like to back up what Lovely Hurlin' said above. You seem bored in work or something WWM and AH isnt better with all this locking and moving. Its not broke so put the padlocks away please.

And this should be in Feedback.

yeah been noticing that there are more arrows denoting moved posts than are correctly located posts. and i agree, this is becoming slightly absolutely annoying. makes the search pages look so scrappy and disorganised.

i personally attribute this to the removal of the global site search capabilities... such as the 'new posts' button we used to love. people are logging on now and just living in single forums such as afterhours to save the bother of rooting around the site to see whos posting where.

The forum is called after hours.... I have seldom seen a thread with 0 reply's in it. So why not just leave the offending threads. It adds veriety.

People come in to this forum to chat about all sorts. E-V-E-R-Y THING!!!

    ;)

I don't know if you can really win this one WWM. You can be fair and move it to the correct forum, but as MonkeyFudge mentioned, some people just don't learn. Use your discretion. Your tough, but ultimately fair........ even when I don't like it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,514 ✭✭✭Rollo Tamasi

i read 50% of this thread as i'm heading to bed now in a minute. My suggestion is to create a sub forum from AH called "The AH **** Bin" and use it as a repositry for all the **** threads that get posted in AH.

If a thread needs to be moved, simply lock it and move it to the **** bin without leaving a shadow thread in AH. Then leave the ****ers to come to the realisation that their thread for locked and binned for a reason and to post it in the proper place.

Move the thread to the relevant forum but delete every post except for the original post so as to avoid any charter issues regarding spam and abuse in other forums. I assume that as a mod you have a method of easily deleting all the posts and leaving the first one. This will save you having to proof read the whole thing and taking out the ****e bits (a futile endeavor anyway as you will end up either removing too much or too little depending on who reads it and someone will always moan about it)

If the above suggestion is handy enough to do for you then I think that’s the best option. You can yellow card the O.P. then, informing him of his mistake and warn him if he offends again you'll give him a red card and ban him for a couple of weeks.

I just started a thread about whether Lois Lane is a slut or not? Discuss

Whitewashman said it should go to the films forum. (I was like WTF)

So anyway it got closed in the films forum.

    I still think Lois is a ho:D

    its not about winning.

im trying to figure out if there is a better way to do things.

believe it or not, a lot of people like threads to go in the correct forum for one reason or another.

me personally, i hate moving threads. its annoying. its just as easy to lock or delete a thread. in fact, its easier.

but im asking the people what the people want. if people feel that Ah should be left, then thats what i think we will do. if people think the thread should be closed, then thats what we will do.

besides, other mods have beencomplaining that when i move threads over, you bunch have filled the thread with crap already, so ive had my knuckles rapped on the mod forum :(

besides, what wrong with letting the people have their say in the running of a forum?

as terry pratchett would say, one man one vote. im the man, i have the vote* :)
    muahahahahahaha

*NB this may not actually be true.

Lock them and move them to the recycle bin. If they're not locked the recycle bin would end up as another feedback. This way you're not p!ssing off other mods and you're teaching people to look for the correct forum before posting - you're work load should lighten after people learn.

People have to learn that they're not going to agree with all the decisions that are made, but that's life.

It's up to the mods really but that's my 2 cents.

When a thread get's moved to Humanities from AH I just ignore the pre-move stuff and let people know that they're in Humanities with a post. That said I have returned the odd thread that just plainly didn't belong.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 235 ✭✭antSionnach

    From the charter:
This forum is akin to the "General" forum you will find on most Internet forums. You will find threads covering many issues here and it is the most popular forum on Boards.ie. There are lots of other forums covering a vast array of topics, this forum is more general and doesn't deal in any specifics.

just so we're clear what is "off topic" here?

I get the feeling people are expected to post on everything and anything, but somehow, not just 'anything'??

I think the only solution would be to scrap AH and then people would have to post in other fora. Otherwise, do nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,712 ✭✭✭Unearthly

I say delete them, and send a short pm to the user saying they will be banned next time they put a wrong topic in the forum.

Then they get the point not to do it again as their topic will be gone and they will be banned from AH.

and thats fine. i dont have a problem with threads moved back with 'jeez, feic off with this rubbish' note at the bottom :)
just so we're clear what is "off topic" here?

actually, i think that was just the standard type of sharter that was drawn up.

i cant think the last time anything off topic was moderated, and its not really that type of forum. i think we can all appreciate that other fora are more strict with regards this, and rightly so, but in here its not really applicable.

this thread is really about those threads that 'common sense' dictates should be in another forum. its not about cut and dried rules.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,102 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

I know it's not about winning, sorry it was wrongly phrased. I meant I don't know if you can find a workable solution to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,658 ✭✭✭✭The Sweeper

I don't think the issue is necessarily "Things that shouldn't be in After Hours". Yes it's an all-encompassing forum, all things to all people, blah blah. It's more to do with the fact that there are other forums created specifically to deal with much of what gets put into After Hours.

Additionally, there are plenty of newbies who post threads that get crapified within minutes in AH, where they may have been treated to more lengthy consideration in the appropriate forum. Chances are those newbies aren't even aware that there IS a forum for whatever they posted in AH.

What would using the correct forums do?

The search function wouldn't have to trawl the entire bulletin board for results if everything to do with movies was in the films forum.

Newbies wouldn't get put off after having their first thread efforts shat upon in AH if there was a more open awareness of the presence of other forums (forae?)

Moderating After Hours would be a more specific job, harking back to the simple 'beat them with a club' moderation style days of Monty and Castor Troy.

At the moment, everybody squeezing everything into AH means that the purpose of AH is blurred. It is a funny forum? No, that's Humour. Is it for current affairs? No, that could be Politics, News or Humanities. Is it a discussion forum? Eh, everything's a discussion forum. Is it for bringing up ridiculous things? Surely that's the Cuckoo's Nest. Is it for fighting with people? That's the Thunderdome. Is it for getting people's opinions when your relationship has broken up? No, that's Personal Issues. Is it for arguing about God and the meaning of life? No, that's Religion and Humanities. Is it for telling the moderators they're a bunch of nazis? That's feedback.

    So what's After Hours for?

Personally, I believe After Hours is for serious topics that you don't want people to take seriously.

The only way it can be described as the 'down the pub' forum now is if you put a curfew on it: After Hours is for the discussions that take place in the pub after 10.30pm, when everyone's locked, discretion has been thrown to the wind, everybody's got a loud opinion that may not be necessarily based in fact, someone will punctuate the discussion by playing tunes in their armpit, someone else may throw their drink over the topic starter, someone will start to cry, a bunch of people will demand that the conversaton be taken seriously and therefore move to a different venue and everyone who's left will continue on, talking utter rubbish on a random subject, fighting sporadically, juggling beermats, being sick in the toilets, dancing on the tables, changing the subject by the second and eventually falling over.

I think something between AH and TCN is whats needed. Move the threads you cant decide on there without locking them and leave them regardless of where the thread goes (within reason).

Said thread should only be locked if:

    a) It descends into personal abuse
    b) Its legally dangerous for Boards (slander etc)
    c) It goes ridiculously OT

AH looks unreadable and messy since all this crap started.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Dooom

Just delete them and let the poster know that it's in the wrong forum and to find the right forum his/herself.

/edit: Oh, didn't see the other 3 pages. Nevermind me..I'll just be over here.

So, you're frustrated, annoyed and not getting support from the other mods who don't like acquiring threads with a heap of AH-style crap in 'em? Bad mod-team-man-ship. :D

Option #7 (or whatever) - swap boards with another mod for a bit. Whilst I find this forum funny as, I wouldn't want to mod it, so I figure you could use the break.

Funny you should say that, I would love to mod AH, I'm not really sure why though. I like a challenge I guess! :D

Maybe a temp mod to help with the moving as nesf being away, you seem to be doing all the moving WWM.

    still looking for opinions.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/PhillyBlunt/banthemall.jpg No, not really. If a user has more than a certain amount of posts - yes, as they should have been around long enough. Newbies - move post and notify so they will know there are other forums out there/in here.

Dub thread in AH - swift justice with the short sharp shock...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

stickied so we canget some more opinions.

at the moment, im just moving those threads that really really should be in another forum, like embay threads.
and im only closing those that really need to be closed. like a certain someones sig discussion (shall i ban him as well?)

hey, i was also thinking, we should have a 'ban someone for a week' competition as well.
we can get some nominations for being banned for the week, and whoever wins, gets banned for a week!

its like ancient roman gladatorial games, but we just get rid of one person that is annoying the shít out of m... er, us for the week :)

What if like me who has been banned twice before? Three strikes and you’re out and all that. I’m not sure I like that idea :o

I think that people subjected to this kind of concensus banning for a 'bit of Friday fun' (or whatever) should not be considered banned as such. Kiera's right, it just wouldn't be fair.

What about creating a concept known as the Friday ban or 'Fran' for short. That way you could be 'Franned' for a week without it being considered a real ban. Would that work? I like the idea of 'Franning' soemone :D

i have no idea where the 3 strikes and your out business comes from.

and i was being facetious with the weekly banning :)

nesf is busy with life at the moment and will return at some stage that suits him.
no idea where the gib is, but i know he is doing a lot outside of boards at moment, so mostly its just me in charge.
lunatics taking over the asylum and all that

as for the 'fran', nah, i actually like the idea of a weekly ban :)

but then again, im not very nice.

    muah - muahaha - muahahahahahahahahahahaa*cough*

Aw, I liked the idea* and it needn't be just one day, just that the decision is announced on a Friday :D

    * providing I gain immunity for coming up with a name for the practice of course.
