Yup, you can do that for sure, and it's good fun to do. You should have a look at fon.com though (http://www.fon.com/) - get a FON router for a fiver, set it up and get free access wherever you go.

FON is based on pretty similar technology to the above, openWRT and chillispot.

(Disclaimer: I am an adviser to fon. It's still really cool though.)
