driving past a house yesterday noticed a Portugal flag flying outside, i know the resident is Irish and not Portuguese, and whenever Man Utd are playing , he always flies the Man Utd flag. As a nation we like English club football teams, but seam incapable of having any affinity with the English national team ? i was at the match in '95 when England supporters ran amuck, but also abroad i witnessed English fans cheering on the Irish when we were playing.

Ive seen the same, and even though i wouldnt be Englands biggest fan i was cheering for them yesterday and i thought quite highly of them when they really plucked themselves after the loss of both Beckham and Rooney.

England could cheer for us with all they've got and many Irish people still wouldn't give a toss.

It's a similar situation with ourselves and NI supporters. Most Irish people would cheer on the NI team if they were at the World Cup but most NI fans wouldn't cheer on the Irish team if we were at the World Cup.

It's just rivalry. It's not a big deal.

I have no affinity to the English national team because I'm not English. I wanted them to lose yesterday for 3 reasons - their arrogance, their OTT media and the fact that they play horribly.

I don't know why people in this country care that we don't support the English. Neither do the Scots and the Welsh and most English people don't give a sh*t.

the cockiness and arrogant way they go about football is why they are disliked. the belief that they have a given right to win the world cup is just annoying.

Same here to be honest but I think we'd be in the minority. I think they got quite a bit of support back in 1982 when they were at the World Cup.

Except on your point about the NI team...the only time I ever shouted for them was when they beat England.

That game last night was feckin' quality from my perspective...I feel a certain affinity with the English fans, cos I recall the pain of being put out by the other Iberians in Japan.
As for people whinging about ABE supporters...I feel the same way about people supporting England who aren't from there...but I don't feel the need to complain or make threads about it.

God I hope not. He seems really arrogant. Interestingly enough, English people have been writing on his Wimbledon blog saying they want him to lose because when Murray was asked who he was supporting in the World Cup he said "anybody but England".

Do you know what really pisses me off? Its the people who dont know a thing about football celebrating the English loss yesterday. The men who played Portugal yesterday were dedicated, hardworking, sporting heroes to all young English kids and in the pub where I was there was fat, overweight Dublin businessmen cheering to see these men openly emotional at losing out on what they had worked so hard for.

Obviously I support NI and not England, but I would have liked to see them qualify yesterday. Win or lose, no team of sportsmen - in any sport - deserves that kind of mockery

Agreed. Have a Rugby fan in the office tellin me all about Thierry Henry's fitness levels and statistics :rolleyes: I'm like whatever. Been an arsenal fan for 25 years LOL

By that logic, it would be pretty hyprocritical for Irish people to support English clubs wouldn't it

imo, apart from not supporting the English due to historical rivalries, it has a lot to do with the behaviour of England fans in the recent past and the media coverage of their team. Take the disgraceful media portrayal of ronaldo after last nights game for example. Blame ronaldo, but not a thug who stamps an opposing player in the groin!!!

Indeed, but don't forget the old tradition of our irish players leaving to join the English clubs. I am a Bohs supporter too, god i have so much love to give.

Agreed. May be thug is slightly a bit much, with it being a world cup quarter final and tempers and passion at a high but it was nasty clash none the less. And I'll never cheer the English for one main reason, how scared I was as a young lad in Lansdowne rd watchin those thugs (not harsh in this context) destroying our stadium. Granted that is not England and its people on a whole, but not too many countries out there have fans that react like that. Also, being a neighbouring country, we get to hear/see their media reactions...which would drive you nuts!!

every second ad on the tv is about england going to win the world cup etc> (until yesterday of course).
it's ok not to support them. it doesn't make you racist.
you would be hard pressed to find an english person supporting germany.
although i do find it laughable when someone wearing a premiership jersey is booing england.

for those of you berating people for watching english tv; it has far superior programming. there are hundreds of niche channels on sky digital and most of them are english. (there is also the black entertainment network, but that's another debate for another day). of course people are going to be exposed to english propaganda. you can't avoid it in this country.
there is also the fact that Ireland has a far smaller population than england. the money and the viewers are not available to support hundreds of niche channels.

you are allowed to not support england. if it's the past that bothers you, then you are also allowed to not support spain and holland, two other countries who, in the past, made incursions into Ireland. (holland with king billy and spain with their war against england and wanting to get a foothold in Ireland). let's not forget the vikings either. that rules out denmark, sweden and norway.

i don't think it's bad form (again, unless you are wearing a premiership jersey while doing it). i think it's funny that they lost. i think of all those men and women all across england crying into their pints of ale as if someone close to them had just died and get a good laugh out of it.

oh yeah. i was outside the pub last night and some scumbag* was talking about how glad he was that england had lost.
i walked up to him and, in my best cockney accent, started waving my hands around and calling him a wanker for saying those things. i stopped just before he decked me and told him i was joking.

*i had seen him outside earlier and he was boasting to his friends about how many times he had gotten away with drink driving. one of the stories involved his vague recollection about crashing into some other car and driving away.

Yes I will never forget that match. People could easily have been killed or seriously injured. Theres absolutely no room for this sort of violence in any sport and although the situation has improved somewhat I have to say that I would not feel comfortable with a large contingent of English away fans in any future encounters with the England side

Do people not understand the concept of rivalry? Half the fun of sport is the "us and them" aspect of it. Why should we cheer on England because they are geographically closer to us than Portugal?

I really really like the English people, I loved living in London, it so much nicer than Dublin but every two years I cheer any the other team. The best games of football are those with intense rivalry: Liverpool v Man Utd, Celtic v Rangers, Barcelona v Madrid. It makes things interesting.

who said the republic of ireland should support england? As it was pointed out NI, Scotland, and Wales often dont. But not giving someone your support isnt the same thing as gloating at their loss. I dont believe there are that many Portugal supporters in Ireland tbh:rolleyes:

The comments I have heard have not been meant with a spirit of fair rivalry or sportsmanship but downright bitterness
