Typical Irish attitude to the malaise of this country.

Seconded, the reason we have corrupt politicians is exactly because of attitudes like that

I think it's an absolute disgrace that he's getting a State Funeral. I know protocol demands it, but it still leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Still, much as I detest the man, I hope his family are coping.

Agree, but this is the same family that are living off his ill gotten gains.

National disgrace that he was allowed to dodge punishment and deserved jail

Fair enough, but I still think the ordinary people of Ireland should have rebelled and ended his life 20 years ago.

There is too much apathy in this country now imo. Back in our grand-parents time he wouldn't have been tolerated.

Dont get me wrong, I know all to well about the corruption but he did do some good service too and I think most ppl would give him some credit for that. I just dont think today is the day to dig up the dirt.

Some of the comments here are sickening and I think a mod should close the thread if it continues. Its distasteful and disgusting:mad:

Some consideration for the family that has lived as lavish a lifestyle as the great crook himself?

Don't come in on your high horse about the most corrupt person in Irish Politics. Claiming that the posters "know f**K all about" is a very sweeping statement and YOU should retract it. Some people have been directed affected by his corruption, you should think about that before attacking other people's opinions.

    Why, because he died???

I'm sorry for his family who i am sure loved him and will miss him, but he wronged a nation, so f*ck him.

The only bad thing is they offered the guy a state funeral.....just more tax money gone astray.

Insignificant to the fact that the guy is dead so going on about all the sh1te he done doesnt change much now.

Why, to appease the bleeding hearts that are becoming more and more prevalent in this country?

No way, as i said, i feel sorry for the family but at the end of the day he did wrong. And the smug fu*ker got away with it.

why? why the **** should we be respectful to a scumbag like him? his regeime lead to the corruption culture of the eighties and i grew up in the sparwling under resourced estates he and his fianna fail lackeys spread all over dublin to get their brown envelopes. for the last two hours thers been nothing but sycopathy on the radio and tell about how great he was. well he wasnt! he ****ed us over to look after his golden circle of mates. made millionaires out of land developers who still have us over a barrell now , spent a charity fund for one of his collegues on himself, recieved millions in donations from big business and forced the only journalist at the time who had the courage to investigate him out of the country. the poor bastards still living in canada now. and dont get me started on the massive tax evasion he not only engaged in but got party collegues to expand on!

we have divorce in this country now, a third of all kids are born to single mothers and feck all go to mass anymore. why the hell should we hang onto the "dont speak ill of the dead" anachronism? this is 21st century ireland and if i want to point out what an unmitigating self serving scumbag CJ is thats my right!

Someone clarify, do we get a day off for state funerals? Or extra pay for working during one?

    Like this from the BBC

"Charles Haughey and his entourage enjoyed a lavish lifestyle. He owned a yacht, his own island, race horses and a mansion.

Many believed he was the ideal man to deal with the Irish Republic's chronic debt problem......"

    Only in Ireland......

    Does sound a bit like Alan Partridge too! ;}

However i wouldnt compare the death of millions of jews with old Charlie. All i was trying to say is well he is croaked now so whats the point in slating the guy.Im no fan of the guy but hes gone now so thats that.

    Yeah, point taken.

I really do think it's incredible how much apathy there is in this country to corrupt politicians, an almost strange type of admiration.

A country that once would go on a mad killing spree if their rulers p*ssed them off, is now populated with submissive slaves.

    Attitudes must change.

If you could write his epitaph, what would you choose? It could be an original line, a line from a poem, perhaps just the word "Charvet" whatever!

I think mine would be "even in death, a swindler" alluding to his state funeral

    What and where?

Some might say that the IFSC and what that did to kickstart the economy and turn the country around is his lasting legacy.

But think they should put something up anyway. Given his capacity for appreciating the arts, maybe something abstract in someplace like the Temple Bar Arts centre...

The man didn't harm me in any way. Infact I think he is the greatest leader we ever had. We came out of a very very bad time with him. Fair enough he was corrupt but at the end of the day Ireland came out better with and because of him.

    RIP CJ Haughey.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFSC

The IFSC was not charles haugheys brainchild, it was Dermot Desmond's and we all know how maliable Haughey was to suggestions from Developers!!! so no!
Unless its a statue of him with a brown envelope:rolleyes:

Why does he deserve a monument? What good did he do? You don’t make a saint of someone just because they’re dead.

    What and where?

A giant brown envelope hanging from the front of the Dail.

    Fitting i think.

    You are deluded,

the man deserved prison - not a state funeral or monument.

How about turning one of the Islands he stole, I mean bought, into a national park as a tribute to his deviousness and political cunning?

I won't shed any tears. In fact, I suspect he's getting a proper state funeral purely so people can make sure he's dead.

Whatever. What was he ever charged for? What was he ever found guilty of? Nothing. He was on balance a very good leader for this country and he was instrumental in laying the foundations for the wealth this country currently enjoys but I suppose, you on the day of his death wouldnt even give him a little credit? Anything at all positive you could say? I wont retract anything because the blind all out critiscism shows the ignorance of some of the posters here. If you or others knew what you were talking about you would be able to see through the corruption (he wasnt the only one btw) for just one day.

People tend to forget this. Amazing what a media scandal will do to change the minds of a nation.

Fact is that he was instrumental in bringing this country to what it is today.

He clearly took what he concieved to be his share and did it without telling anyone but remember that he was not a Saddam Hussein sitting on his gold and ivory throne while the people under him starved.

He cared greatly for the country's welfare and although he did a lot of things "his way" and rewarded himself for his efforts, he still brought massive positive change to the country.

When he was in power everyone loved him for what he did for the country. More recently everyone hates him for what he did for himself.

The money he siphoned off for himself is an absolute pittance to the money he brought into the country. We was still wrong but I don't care. I'm too happy with my nice car, nice house and massive TV.

RIP Haughey. Thanks for the TV.

When they were building the O'Connell St spike they had a big 60 ft pit dug for the foundations. I remember thinking at the time they should just leave it like that and it could eventually be the Haughey memorial.

the corruption culture of the eighties

Yeah, especially 82-87. No sorry, hold on, that was Garrett the Good and Dick Spring. Tricky one this, how are we going to continue the myth that FF and Charlie were the root of all evil and everything wrong when the facts and stats contradict us constitutionus. I mean the 80s were terrible, but FG and Labour were mostly in office, how do we get around this and suggest that everything that was wrong stemmed from a few illegal payments made by rich builders and not anything like the crap economy or complete mismanagement?

So you weren't around in the 80's then eh?

I might have a big car, tv etc myself, but I will never forget how my family struggled during the late 70's and 80's.

Why? Prove that statement. PROVE that we we would have been worse off with a different Taoiseach.
