It strikes me as pretty ridiculous the way every single Irish person has access to adult material online yet there is still a mood in the Irish mainstream that it is evil.
It sometimes feels like we are still living in the 1950s. We need Larry Flynt!

Yes but we have a choice as to the websites that we visit. I do not want to see porn so someone is protecting me from having to. I would like to thank that person here now.
    Thank You.

It depends on your age I guess.

As someone in their mid 20's Id have no problem talking about it with someone until their 40's I guess.
Talking about porn with a 60 year old is a nono!

Probable depends on your upbringing and religious views also.

Porn doesn't bother me in the slightest but I haven't really watched much since I was a spotty teenager. However, I do think that there needs to be some kind of control over it in order to protect young kids from being exposed to it. Other than that, it should be freely available to any adults that are sad enough to want lots of it. Personally I prefer the real thing.

I think adult porn involving consenting adults is okay. I agree there should be more age-verification embedded into the sites, (but that would not stop people getting via Kazaa etc). I think that parents need to show responsibility. Netnanny and similar programs can block porn sites and they can use that to prevent their children coming across them online.

It seems that the Judeo-Christian world's hangups about sex were not shared by pre-Christian Europe. Maybe the pagans were not wrong about everything. :)

The Church was anti-sex for a long time partly because they wanted to differentiate themselves clearly from the 'hedonistic' paganism.

There is nothing wrong with lots of porn as long as it doesnt interfere with your own life or relationships, like watching porn istead of spending time with your signigicant other. Its not sad, if thats the case then most of the world is full of sad people, imo :)

what evidence can you give that porn in the irish mainsteam (what does this mean ?) is evil?

at what point do you feel like youre living in 1950's ireland?

you can read 'the catcher in the rye' cant you?

We're very prudish about sexuality, that's all, not just porn. Used to be the doings of the church, not the tabloids. But we're a nation of morons for accepting it and listening to them. It's really like the 1950s, despite the best efferts of the Sunday World or some of the twenty-somethings you here chatting in pubs as if their own sex-life was completely vanilla.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I think when talkin about porn a distinction has to be made. Imo porn in the mainstream western tradition is boring, totally uncreative and just not sexy, usually just some naked people havin sex. Its allure is due to the countless years of moralizing by the Christian churches so somehow it's "bad" to have sex, hence the excilleration people get from watchin it.
but on the other hand I really love Japanese hentai, for me they recognise the inherant psycological aspects of sex, exploring themes like submission/domination in a very creative way and of course the tradition of tantric sex to achieve rapid brain change and achieving higher conscioussness free from the guilt complex thats been bred into us. But in answer to the original question will Ireland ever accept porn, I think it's only a matter of time as we break the hold of generations of indoctrination.
Damn it my penis doesn't make me a bad boy! :) (courtesy Bill Hicks)

It is not evil but as a female may I say that it is just booooring (unless you are lesbian).
Females need a lead in time and a little sensitivity and tittilation and it is obvious that all the porn is made for males by males. Even if it starts out as a male female thing it nearly always ends up as a 2 female thing which may be alright for the guys but I just got plain sick of it. So as far as I am concerned you can keep it.

So long as the internet and credit cards exist porn will not be kept out of Ireland.

    You clearly haven't watched enough.

More widespread 'acceptance' and publishing of materials of a pornographic nature would most likely lead to improved quality.

I really don't get why people have such a hangup about porn. If you don't want to see it, then don't bother watching it. Nobody is forcing you to look at it.
As long as nobody gets hurt I have no problems with it.
(and a minor point: the vast, vast majority of porn is obviously made by men for men. I mean, what sort of lesbian would have fake nails *that* long? :p)

People in Ireland do have serious problems with porn. I used to run an adult website. People (females in particular) would often get very uncomfortable around me when they found out. Frequently they would tell me "what about the children?". Unfortunatly there are a lot of dumb ****s in Ireland who think porn = child porn. The two are completely unrelated.

If you try to register the domain cocks.ie you won't be allowed. Sexual domains are refused. There have been a few exceptions (for example, sex.ie) but they are rare.

I also don't buy the argument about getting stricter about porn on the internet "to save the children". If parents weren't so lazy as to leave their kids alone online with no supervision or no "banned sites" list (etc.) there would be no problems with children accessing porn. I really believe allowing your government to make "moral decisions" is a bad bad thing. What is immoral for you is fine for me.

What really puzzles me is that movies which are 12's contain serious violence. But throw in a nipple. Oh no! Even sex. What is wrong with sex? It's natural, much more natural than shooting someone with an uzi. I don't see the problem. Getting aroused is natural and not something to be ashamed of.

And to the women who get upset if their boyfriend looks at porn - his looking at porn has nothing to do with you. Sometimes guys simply want to jerk off, and you have to accept that we like to look at beautiful women. We can't help it. It doesn't mean we love you less.

/i could go on all day

Agree with this, but don't see the porn/child porn connection. Although a lot of people do seem to believe that the participants are being 'abused' in some way.

I remember being in Denmark and seeing porn magazines in the window of a butcher. It's not cliched, I'm being serious here. And for some reason their kids turn out fine (in fact, they turn out damn well more mature and level-headed than ours do).

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I'm not sure children (say from 11 updwards) seeing porn is such a bad thing. I mean, they're not going to be mentally scarred and start speaking in tongues. They're not going to loose their legs.

I can honestly say I've learnt vastly more about the act and plain anatomy from porn than I ever have from school. Naturally there are things you can't know from porn but I certainly feel that when I do have sex (I'm 16, gimme time) that because of porn, I'll be a better lover than if I never had watched porn.

Think what you will, I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, but I just don't think there's anything wrong, offensive or dirty about pornography.

What exactly are the do's/dont's regarding porn in Ireland?

What can you know not show in Mags/Videos/TV for instance?

As the internet is not regulated to Irish standards I dont think its a true indication of Irish law and much of the porn on the internet I believe under Irish law is probable illegal..ie Hardcore.
Am I right or wrong in that understanding?

I'm nearly certain a magazine/video has to be banned by title for it to be taken off the shelfs in Ireland. I know this was the law about 5 years ago. Maybe it has changed since then.

Other than that, pretty much only child porn is banned by law

I cannot find any references to bukkake or beastiality etc. in the law books!

Whats the situation in Sex shops then?

Although I have never been inside one in Ireland....Ive had a look at a couple while in Germany and pretty much everything was catered for...hahaha.

In Ireland Im sure Sex Shops are still getting their stocks seized...heard something about that on the radio before.
So what exactly is the situation as by your reckoning anything with consenting sex acts between adults should be perfectly legal....the customs/gardai appear to think otherwise.

It still crack me up that Playboy was only unbanned ~10 years ago....all that fuss over a mag containing slightly more nudity than FHM!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 850 ✭✭✭DOLEMAN

There isn't a seperate law for sex shops. If the title is not banned, they can stock it.

For example, Playboy was banned but you could get other porno mags in the shops. This means the genre was not banned, rather the title was. Know what I mean?

I'm nearly certain the gardai only seize banned titles during their raids (I read something about this before - again, it was about 5 years ago, maybe the law has changed since then.)

speaking of all these bargepoles, has anyone ever actually seen a bargepole in real life or am i just underprivillaged? maybe i just haven spent much time hanging out on canals

porn is porn. watch it if you want stop whining either way.

and to the op i think the social attitude of this country will have swung massively by the next generation. while the catholic church isnt exactly on its last legs too many people have seen it on all fours.

maybe 10 years and celebraties will be our superiors, porn will be on rte1 and computers will be so huge and expensive that only the 3 richest kings of europe will be able to afford them.

Aren't they the things the Dutch people use in that sport where the leg it along a pier, plant the thing in the water and then climb like **** before it falls over...?

Not while the tabloids are still popular, I'm afraid. You'd be amazed how many people can't stand the church and yet still have prudish attitudes towards sex and porn.
