A quickie on this - is it possible to connect a DVD Player to a laptop to play DVDs? There is a small one available in Dunnes for around €50 and if it worked would be a cheap way to have a DVD with my laptop.

Very few laptops have video input (composite or s-video which you would need) so it would be unlikely but possible that you could play the DVD to the laptop screen. You'd still need to deal with the sound, either to separate speakers or using line-in on the laptop.

If you've a moderately decent laptop with USB2.0 then you could buy an external usb DVD drive for about 70 euro which should play DVDs fine.
