I recently heard from somebody on boards said that if you dip your fone in metilated spirits, it can repair the unit.

Can I just say that you havent a clue what your talking aboot and this is complete BOLONEY
All manufacters state if a mobile is in contact with liquid, moisture, condensation...any form of liquid, it invalidates your warranty,
furthermore, the spirits can cause further damage rendering the fone completly useless.

If you dont know how a mobile fone works or is repaired, then ring or talk to someone who actually knows what they are talking aboot

Whatever abour repairing your phone yourself, anybody that believes dipping an electronic device (not just limited to Mobiles!) in any form of liquid will "fix" it deserves to have their phone broken.
