How to add Apple iBook G4 to Network?

    Hi all

I'm a complete Mac novice first off!

I have a wireless network at home that has two PC's and a laptop connected to it. All 3 are running XP Pro. The network does not have any WEP etc setup - it's wide open as they say.

I've got a second-hand iBook G4 to try and learn my way around using a Mac. It has "Airport Extreme" on it. It can find the name of my network but it insists on asking me for a WEP Password to connect to the network! I treble-checked and there is no security on my network. The 2 PC's and the laptop just connect to it no problemo.

Can any mac boffins educate me to what I'm doing wrong possibly?

    Many thanks.

firstly - why leave your network wide open? that ain't a good idea - damn I wish I was living beside you!!

Put WEP security on you network, then thats two problems solved. Airport Extreme = 802.11g so there be no problem.

Apple probably assume that the users of their machines aren't so crazy as to leave their networks wide open.

ho hum... it's wasn't wide open - i had an access control list of ip addresses setup. i only made it wide open to try and make things easier for the apple smack to connect. fair enough tho, i'll add a WEP key to it then...

May I suggest that a mod move this to the MAC forum?

ok, i managed to add it to the network by doing the following:

removed the ip access list on the router
    created a WEP password
i entered the WEP password in the windows machines and they connected fine
i entered the WEP password in the iBook and it wouldn't connect!!!
i had to enter the key value of the WEP password instead in the WEP hex value - this let me connect.

seems bizarre that the WEP password didn't work on the apple - does it derive a different key somehow than that which the windows one would?

anyway - all is hunky dory now - thx. :)
