    Hey all,

I'm thinking about buying a phone on ebay thats locked to 3 UK.

If I signed up to a 3 Ireland price plan could I use the phone in Ireland??

Unfortunatly No. a three UK phone will be locked to The Three UK network. you'll need an unlocking code from 3 UK to use it.

no. but if you sign up to 3 ireland you'll get a phone much cheaper than any on ebay

I presume 3 run with special firmware that disables the normal unlocking techniques. Has anyone tried to stick generic firmware on a 3 phone, if such a service even exists?

My 6680 is running Generic European Firmware. IIRC 3 do not prevent normal unlocking of the phone, Nokia have changed the locking algorithm for the phones so that codes cannot be generated at present. I believe however it is still possible to unlock your phone at a service centre or by using a cable.

I have the SonyEricsson K something rather and if I look up unlocking sites, they offer an unlocking service for this phone for all operators except 3. I would have thought that implies that the phone has special firmware.
