    Buying a radio scanner for my car..

    If the cops stop and search me.. can they take it off me??

    What are my rights??

    Don't quote me on this but as far as i know you can own one and you can listen to the channels. But it's illegal to act on anything you hear.

    Very hard to get information on this in Ireland, but as far as I know it is illegal to actually store Garda frequencies on your scanner. If you don't store Garda frequencies, and as long as you don't act on anything you've heard as the poster above says, or pass on any information you've heard, you are perfectly within your rights to own and operate a scanner.

    Owning, selling and using a radio scanner is legal contrary to what some people would have you believe. I think mainstream stores - such as Maplin - would have long stopped selling them if there was a sniff that they were illegal.

    You should install a proper car antenna by the way to get the best results, it really makes a big difference than using the internal one inside a car. There's some very low profile types available that you can choose from.
