Anyone else miss Monty?

There was talk of a banhammer coming a few months back, I for one reckon it's a pity it hasn't happened. After Hours has always been spammy but it's reaching new depths of narcisistic, attention-whoring, tedium at the moment. I'm missing Monty's reign of terror atm.

It's no criticism of the mods, they're doing their best but a net can't hold back an ocean. Do any of the mods agree that they need some backup? Or is it just time to unleash and stamp on the first sign of muppetry with a site-ban?

(btw, I'll amp-test myself here, I've no desire to mod AH)

I'd have to agree. The quality of posting on AH has gone waaaaay down lately... though *puts on thinking hat* I'd say a lot of the 'brain drain' on this forum can be linked to the creation of other, more specialist forums, which ensure that there aren't as many 'intelligent' (Well, my opinion) diverse topics on AH any more - thus ensuring a higher proportion of crap.

So, in conclusion, stricter controls? Sure. Not entirely certain what (if any) impact it'll have though...

Those funds were just resting in his account.

Overuse of banning is stupid and immature. I don't think people (normally) need to be banned at all if the mods do their job well. So, stop moaning and being sycophantic to the mods people!

The reason older members feel posts are ****e nowadays is usually just because they have seen it all before and feel jaded.

<3 Monty. His unique brand of ruthless, pitiless thread-culling is sorely missed.

I wasn't allowed to randomly ban people :(

I liked Monty's crusade against pointless polls, where after every offense the punishment ban would be increased by month. By the end of it's run it was exciting waiting for the next pointless poll.

Random Post Testing requires a constitutional change.

Every generation has things which define it, unfortunatly for us the current generation seems to be defined by it's narcisistic, attention-whoring, tedium. I'd also add in melodrama which is probably common to all, but the current generation seem to have blown it out of all proportion.

Giblet should have been allowed to use the Banhammer in my opinion, with the proviso that if he didn't make a headshot with it the person only got probation for a few hours.

After Hours is pretty much the same as it has been before but posts with no content seem to be more noticable. Guys\Girls, if all you have to say is LOLZ, ROFL, ME TOO then don't post, we don't care. Yeah, i've probably been guilty of it in the past but it's not interesting to read.

Thing was - Monty didn't lock threads - he removed them. You never saw the crap threads locked, they just vanished into thin air...

No offense, but I've seen that comment at least a hundred times since I joined. I've even seen people that are only here a month or two say it. Rose tinted glasses me thinks.

It was a stormy winters night. Rain was lashing the windows and the wind was shaking the door. Monty was staring out into the distance, somehow hoping Rusty would return home, like he always did. But deep down Monty knew Rusty was gone. He'd probably been hit by a car or found another home with better food, better love.

In the distance, out on the rough sea, something caught Monty's eye. It was an old, wooden ship, too large to be a yacht yet too small to be a tanker.

Hmmm that's strange, Monty thought to himself.

With time the ship became larger and larger until it was clear that the ship was sailing towards Monty's home. Living next to the beach had it's advantages, but it also meant strange ships arrived from time to time.

When the ship reached the shore one thing was frighteningly obvious. This was no ordinary ship. It was a pirate ship.

Terrified Monty froze, staring at the ship, staring at the strange beasts on the ship.

I must be dreaming, he thought to himself. There is a pirate ship outside my house.

    Yes, I must be dreaming.

Monty walked away from the window and began his nightly routine. Brushing his teeth. Ironing his clothes for the next days work.

    Knock knock.

Someone was knocking on the door.

Rusty had returned. Six months earlier he'd fallen asleep on a ship. He was now the captain of that ship. He had become a pirate. Travelling the world, he terrorised cats and raped bitches.

But Monty didn't care about these things. He was overjoyed to see his Rusty again. He knew he'd come back. He knew it.

    ...

Monty has never been seen again.

Nostalgia just isn't what it used to be.

Thing is, boards has rather grown especially in the last two years with a few dramatic spurts (there are about 45,000 more users than there were when I joined in 2001 and it was around for about three years before that). Put simply, with more people you're going to get more "useless posts" and more chat, or more of something close to chat. Especially on AH, which is the closest thing to the catchall anything-that-don't-fit-anywhere-else board (more so than even TCN, which has exacting standards).

I've said before that I wouldn't mod AH in a fit (not that I was offered the job mind you), I still stand by that and have respect for anyone who can do any sort of half-arsed job at all and we get at least that from our current mods (only kidding, don't ban me, oh wait, you can't:p). I don't see a dramatic new problem to be honest.

I promise, come February, there will be more bannings. I'll have more time to devote to individual suppression and persecution once this month is over. :)

    You forgot the fada.

*raises an eyebrow and the whip*

There's irony from a man so fond of the fada in his own name!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,730 ✭✭✭✭simu

Yes. The fada actually resembles a raised eyebrow so it's doubly symbolic for nesf. :v: o_Ó

I was refering to reason that Ciarán declared his undying love for you at the last beers (that you remembered his fada) and then he goes and forgets Pádraig's... :p
