having the spent the guts of the festive period rolling around in agony come the morning light I've set out on a panicked pursuit of hangover cures, I've hearda couple now but no deal. Milk does not line he stomach in advance, as my mom used to tell me, and pints of water before sleep only stave off the next day nausea, the heaches remain. At length.
Does anyone have any genuine, rock solid hangover cures? They must exist!!!

    ps. sobriey isn't one

No such thing. There was a study done recently on all alleged hangover cures and none were found to work!

They don't. I've tried. Prevention is the best cure! Although, I swear by red bull at the end of a night out, seriously. I used to get mad headaches and sick stomach every morning-after. But then one night I'd a vodka redbull at 2.20am and I was right as rain the next morning. And every time I've tried it since it has worked a treat. Thing is, most times I get too drunk to remember my deadly cure.. so it all goes to waste :D

edit - my missus gets those Lifeline things from the chemist. Basically take two within an hour of your first pint and you're raight as rain the next day!

    from a blog:
we got this hang over cure from the chemist the night before, HATE HANGOVER, they were called, it involved taken 8 tables through out the night. They are amazing, my god, we both were in work waiting to feel bad or get sick, but no, we were perfect! Amazing little things

can't vouch for them [tablets] tho.

Hangover cures work. But only if you're not throwing gallons of alcohol on top of them.

Things like Milk to line the stomach, water to rehydrate you, will all work to a certain degree, but only if you've had four pints or so. No amount of milk will line your stomach against 8 pints of guinness, 2 aftershocks and a double whiskey and coke. If you drink a pint of water after 10 pints, the diuretic affect of the alcohol will negate any benefit in the morning. All it'll do is force you out the bed to piss it out of you.

Moderation is the best hangover prevention. Now, if only I could practice that.

Ah but they're more hangover preventions than cures. These actually can work sometimes. I find vitimin b tablets work unless you really over do it.

New scientist magazine have had 2 they said definitely worked, they did placebo tests and everything.

Best cure is prevention, drink good alcohol to begin with, I recommend skyy vodka and lots of soda water with real lime juice.

The headaches are caused by de-hydration, so if you take a re-hydrating or isotonic drink before you go to bed or when you get up it will help, the salt in the drink helps retain fluids, this is the basic's of how they work.

I used to suffer from the sick stomach and I don't know a cure for it i'm afraid.

When it is really hard to stomach water/milk/anything liquid because you are too giggy to drink it, but you have to re-hydrate yourself here is a magic drinks combo.

    soda water
    lime cordial
    blackcurrent cordial

    2 anadin.

voila!!! you are human again until lunchtime...............

It's downhill from there I'm afraid.

Drink lots of water before you go to bed.

If you don't do this, drink plenty of water when you wake up and eat some ice cream.

    Works for me anyway.

I've been researching this a lot in my life personally.

    My conclusions are currently:

    1) Hangovers are relative to how healthy you are in the first place; i.e. if you're burned out and malnourished, hangovers can be vicious, but if you're very fit and eat organic food all the time, they are much more managable.

    2) The extent to which hangovers affects you seems to change as you grow up (or maybe I was just superfit as a teenager..?)

    3) Hangovers are not created equal; not even nearly, and depend on your personal reaction to what you drink, and to some extent, the environment you're in..

So here are my Top Tips for Hangover Mitigation:

    - Alcohol dehydrates your cells. If you just drink water afterwards, this helps, though arguably not as or as quickly much as drinking an isotonic sports drink, with the right blend of electrolytes / sugars / salts to speed up your ability to rehydrate.

    - Alcohol is acidic. Drinks like Get up and go usually alkalize your stomach, that accelerates your body's process of restoring a decent ph level.

    - Alcohol seems to reduce energy levels. If you have loads of energy it's not so difficult to deal with (which can be from having a really good metabolism). This means, if you exercise more, are holidaying in the countryside with good oxygen / natural energy and are in good health anyway, hangovers are milder. The rest of how you live plays one of the biggest part in how you feel after when you've been drinking.

    - Different alchohols have different ingredients, some of which you may be alergic to, thus exacerbate the hangover effect. Many people I know say alco-pops lead to headaches in 10 minutes. My personal experience is that cheap alcohol often just makes me tired, lethargic, sluggish; I have a different reaction to beer than cider (cider makes me feel a little agressive, beer tired). My favourite is really good wine (costing €25 / bottle in off licence); that usually gets me high as well as drunk, and the hungover feeling is often slightly blissful too.

    - My experience is possibly the best remedy for being hungover or under the weather generally is 4 + shots of wheatgrass. This isn't nice to drink at the time, but half an hour later I feel alive again

    - Walks by the sea are good / in the country are good.

    - Exercise is good

    - Alcoholic activities, like eating kebabs and chips, probably will amplifer the hangover rather than lessen it. I'm sure it's possible to get coffee hangovers, and fastfood hangovers

    - It's smart to calibrate your own recovery threshholds; i.e. if you have an important meeting, and your 25 years old and after going on a serious session, it takes 2 days to sharpen up, don't go on any serious sessions less than 2 days before the meeting

And my favourite technique for hangover mitigation:

    (Aside than more sleep)

    - Scoring some gorgeous female

Maybe but throwing two raw eggs and some olive oil down my neck before hitting the town for a session, doesn't sound too appetising to me. Crazy Russians :D

A pint of water before hitting the bed goes without saying really.

Generally a good fry usually sorts me out (now I know a fry does you damage when you've a hangover, or so I've heard), but it generally hitd the spot.

Heh,you know the scientific community will not conclusively announce a hangover cure for the simple reason that hangover's are self inflicted.
That is,dont do it unless you can handle the consequences yourself.

Saying that tho, cures do exist, but i think it depends on the person. for me,water is all i need. oh,and a walk home usually sobers you up enough too!

Care to tell us what they were?

    one is mentioned here
    http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/drugs-alcohol/dn6083

this is another thread I mentioned it in

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054864048

I used to make my own booze and on any distilling website they will tell you that the sign you have made your vodka correctly is the lack of a hangover, I was amazed how much the difference was. Dehydration will always get you but cogeners and contaminants/unwanted alcohols are the main cause. If you are severely dehydrated you will be "hungover" anyway so you cannot blame that on alcohols contents but rather your own foolishness of not drinking extra water to counter the alcohols diuretic effect.

Don't go to sleep, stay up all night and keep drinking. It works for me. Now that I've got no job; I just drink all day long and never get any hangovers :D

I've found that plenty of water before I go to bed usually helps a bit. 2 pints of it and I'm usually reasonably ok in the morning. This probably won't cure you but it makes me feel better anyway. Up in the morning have a coffee, the biggest nastiest fry up you can make and some orange juice. Followed by more coffee/coke/water during the day. Aside from being incredibly unhealthy it has made me feel better on occassion after a nights drinking.

Off course the coffee & coke probably dehydrates you even further so maybe best to avoid that.

    Cheers
    Rory

You can only really prevent hangovers, not cure them.
You're liver will break down the alcohol at a certain amount over a certain period of time.
Cigarettes, onions, french toast, fried eggs & ham, water, paracetamol etc don't alter this.

Having said that I've always found two pints as soon as the pubs open to work wonders! (but not for the auld liver)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭Siogfinsceal

the answer is simple. 2 little tablets called 'lifeline' you can get em in most chemists. They are worth every penny. You take 2 with your first drink and then have a glass of water before bed and you be grand. next day have a bottle of fizzy orange lucozade sport and a bag of brown hula hoops always works!!
if your ever feelin really awful or kno wyou will when you get home take 2 paracetamol before bed set an alarm for 8am and take 2 more then by th etime you oproperly wake up you feel grand

oh, and to save a hang over never ever mix orange bacardi breezer with other drinks. I can mix all other drinks but whatevers in that orange breezer is evil

People who say "If you wake up hungover you must eat a fry" etc. The thing is, you're hungover already, eating greasy food isn't going to make it magically go away, although you might find pleasure in eating the greasy food, if that's what you're into. I gave up on hangovers ages ago, you just have to deal with them. If you wake up hungover you just have to ride them out, for me I'm usually not right again for 2 days. The first day is just dizzyness and nausea and sometimes vomitting followed by a night of insomnia, then day two I'm just completely wrecked. A few pints makes you feel good again but this prolongs the hangover till the next day sometimes (although it wont be quite as bad).
These lifeline tablets are useless - end of - I've tried them 3 or 4 times and they've done nothing for me. I think the couple of pints of water help a bit but I still have the dizzyness and nausea afterwards, and it can ruin your sleep as you'll be pissing every few hours.
So if you're a heavy drinker, you will suffer bad. People who say they don't get hangovers? Well I think they're either lying or they don't drink much at all.

Plenty of water through out the night takes the blow out of the hangover.
I always go for a huge Mc Donnalds with a milkshake the next day, it doesnt cure it but certainly helps alot.

Don't have painkillers before you go to bed. It makes your stomach feel worse.
Drink as much water as poosible. Eat some toast..it always makes me feel better. :p
The next day just drink as much fluids (non alcoholic ) as possible.

I go to work every Friday with the mother of all hangovers and tbh... a ltr bottle of water and a sambo and Im brand new.. appart from feeling a bit tired but physical pain goes away... Do not go near bottles of mineral ie 7up, diet coke, red bull.... will do you no good at all.. H20, as much as you can drink without drowning*... Best thing you can possibly do... Think of yourself as a dehydrated plant.. Just keep watering yourself and you will blossom again in no time at all :D

2 or 3 glasses of ice-cold orange juice does it for me (or even fanta)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 387 ✭✭fischerspooner

so you're saying 2 glasses of orange juice rids you of your hangover completely? If that is the case you do NOT have a hangover, believe me.

Well...hangovers being a direct result of dehydration, water is the obvious cure.
If you drink as much water as you're supposed to then you'll be fine.

In the rare event that you still have headachesafterwards, then you'll need some sugar too.

If you constantly suffer from hangovers or find that a few pints of water before bed doesn't help, then you simply aren't drinking as much water as you're supposed to throughout the day.
