They can pretty much do whatever they want, reasonably, as long as they apply it to everybody.

Sure they army has shaved head as mandatory, even the girls.

It is not illegal. They are hiring you to work with their company, under their policy. It applies to everyone. If she had refused you an interview that would be different. It would also be discrimination if they sacked you for it after you got in.

If you don't agree to their policies then they have no obligation to hire you.

Dont worry, you're not the only one who ever had this experience.

By all means, prove me wrong.

It is illegal, because it is a question/statement that would never be applied to a female applicant.... well, the part about facial hair certainly, and it's unlikely that a company would ask a woman to cut her hair(Excluding, of course, models and actors, etc.).

If a company says "[insert gender here] must/cannot do/have *whatever*", it is inherently discriminating on a gender ground. All rules must apply regardless of gender..... within certain reason.

If it really is Dunnes' policy that "blokes must have short hair and be clean shaven", then they are discriminating. I've read a few Equality cases that have won on more flimsy grounds than this.

Alternatively, tell them you are a Sikh(or similar, or make up a religion of your own) and must not cut your hair - discrimination on the grounds of religion.

Exactly Malafus I was just to lazy to say so.

There has been cases where there was discrimination for forcing a clean shave because it was felt the onus was a much greater burden than women had to put up with in the company

I almost went to an interview for Galway City Council with blue hair. I dyed it at the last minute though, it would've looked ridiculous.

i used to have long hair.
people don't take you seriously when your hair is long. the first thing they see is stoner/bum/waster etc. that's the experience i had anyway.

thats so unfair! who is to say whats controversial or even normal nowadays??

Dunnes Stores do apply it to women. I knew a girl who went for an interview with them 2 years ago. Now this girl had long hair, it was down to her hips. During the interview they asked her to cut it a bit shorter, stating policy. She did, because she needed the job.

I guess it could be argued that they apply it on a case by case basis for women and to not the same length as men are asked, but in effect they are not discriminating; everyone has to keep their hair in check.

i worked in dunnes too, same story. i didnt have long hair but the managers could and often did make people shave if they didnt that day, was annoying but wat do u expect? no one cares about sh.ite jobs like that and certainly not enough to treaten legal action... another thing i noticed was how they were very keen to follow all employment laws so i would seriously doubt u would even have a case

    dito..

used to work in dunnes as well, with fairly long hair,
was told when i got the job to cut it.. by the hr blob..

i forgot to cut it, but she said nothing about it..

i was never told to tie it up either, but i'm positive other people in dunnes were told to tie it up.. that is a policy somewhere in the contract afaik ..
    applies to girls as-well..

Now that hardly compares to making a guy get a short back and sides now does it?
Either you have a maximum hair length or you don't. The fact that your male/female is utterly irrelevant.

I actually had a friend who was told to cut his hair in Dunnes while employed. He simply pointed out the fact that such a demand was against equality laws and nothing more was said.

a friend of mine worked in dunnes before and when he came in unshaven they would send him up to the bathroom with a pack of razors and foam. he saved loads of money on razor blades that summer - he loved it too cos he used to get to skive off for about 20 minutes from the job.

It could be claimed that its for hygiene reasons. Stacking food shelves like.

I worked there too, they prefared you to have your hair tied back if you are a girl. Unless its really short.

As a short-haired girl, I never had that problem when I worked in Dunnes years ago...

This thread makes me sad; I cut off hair that was nearly down to my elbows two weeks ago, purely for the interview reasoning. Now its all cold and stuff when I go outside! :(

Dear god man, that's just not right! If you're going to cut your hair you could at least try and get some money for doing it, or do it for a good cause. My hair being shaven raised €1500 for Chernobyl you know?

I know, in hindsight I should have done it for charity. I just woke up one (sunny unemployed) morning with my hair matted to a face/pillow combination, and said to myself there's no way I'm dealing with this before 8am every morning! Round to the barbers and cut off before I even had time for toast! :(

I'm a bloke and I recently got my long hair shaved off.
    Photo

Not because of a job or anything, just got bored.

    @ Mercury Tilt -
Did you actually read the thread - he was told BEFORE the interview started that he would have to get it cut - his name is BEEKAY, he actually posted up what was said in the interview.
He was never going to get the job because of his hair. Its not that he didnt get the job and then blamed his hair.

Then why didn't they just ask me to keep it tied back?

I would have no problem if it was all staff were asked to have short back and sides, but it is that they single out men in particular

And then she asked me would i get it cut.
I said "No".(i'm not gonna get my hair cut for a three week job!)
And then she patronised me by asking was i "in a band or something".
    .
Did she have long hair herself?
Did you ask her what band she was in?

It is a matter of company image. The vast majority of men with long hair look unkempt, whereas most women with long hair look presentable. Companies will generally have regulations regarding employee presentation if they are going to be in the public eye which most employees will be working in a supermarket.

I had so many problems with this in London during the 80s but I never cut my hair and still have it long (what's left of it:)). These days, you don't have to cut your hair to get a job. If they won't employ you, don't work for them. Someone else will employ you.

Why would you want to work for such a antiquated, boring bunch of farts?
