Did you buy a Sony rootkit CD in Ireland?

Why would anyone contact the moderators? Why wouldn't they just return them for a full refund?

(theking is alluding - rather than just saying, for some bizarre reason - to this story. Sony BMG have - finally - agreed to recall the CDs, so if you have one, take it back to where you bought it. However you shouldn't use their uninstaller just yet, because it's been alleged that it can cause worse damage than the rootkit itself.)

In fairness there's no need to contact a moderator, no problem posting the info on the forum but contacting a mod is abit pointless if you have a sony rootkit CD,

Anyway, weren't these CD's only sold in the US?

No Cabaal, they were sold in Europe too.

I still don't understand what the OP was trying to achieve. Damien.m reckons that he phrased it that way because there might be some sort of legal concern, but the story about the rootkit is WELL in the public domain. Sure, discussing legal strategies might not be well advised, but since regular users wouldn't know what the HELL the OP is going on about in the first place, I fail to see how it would get that far.

Am I missing something? Was the OP /not/ being a know-it-all turning his slightly more informed nose up at Ordinary Folk? Or just chronically misunderstood / unable to explain things?

Irrespective, it would be nice to hear of anyone who bought such a CD

I presume the idea of contacting the mods is so the purchasers will not have to admit in public they really bought the CD. :)

This is not over they are still using SunnComm's MediaMax DRM (which) installs itself on Windows systems as well as Mac systems. Could we issue a consumer advisory for Irish customers, advising their of their statutory rights and alerting them to the security risks.

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.

I ought, of course, as has been correctly pointed out, to have made clear that my reference to the moderators of the forum was because they are connected to Digital Rights Ireland, and didn't relate to their moderating duties.

DRI are likely to be interested in hearing from anyone who bought an infected SonyBMG CD in Ireland and used it here in their PC, or who first used one in their computer in the jurisdiction, having bought the CD elsewhere.

By doing so, damage has been caused to their computer.

I can understand the op secrecy, I would'nt want to admit in public to having bought a cd off that list :)

How do I identify if I have the rootkit?

Also, is the DRM referred to in various postings the same application that must be installed to use branded OD2 download sites?

As far as I can tell OD2 sites (Mycokemusic, Eircom, HMV, Virgin) use Microsoft Windows Media DRM
