Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router can't connect to esat bt modem

Have set up wireless router and it is connecting to the wan but not to the net. The connection lights on the router are on as well as the modem lights. The modem works fine when I connect it directly to the laptop via an ethernet cable. But when I try and connect the modem via the router I can't access the internet.

I set up the configuration settings on the router, it is using PPPoE. When I try and check the status of the router it is set to 'disconnect'. When I try and connect the message 'Cannot find IP address of PPPoE server'. I checked the configuration settings onf the modem and they also use PPPoE.

Does anyone have any ideas how this can be resolved.

    Thanks

Maybe you need a cross over cable?

PPPoE is right. Have you set the VPI and VCI? They need to be 8 and 35 respectively. Good choice of router by the way. I used the same one having moved from a Belkin and it never gave me a moments trouble (once I had it set up :p).

What you will need to do is set up your Wireless router as a 'wireless bridge'.
This involves having the modem as the 'master' router(gateway) in your network. For this to happen, it has to be directing all traffic in your network. Your computer will only know this when it receives instructions on how to send traffic through DHCP.
You can find out who the gateway is by clicking start, run and typing cmd(For win XP/2000) or command (for w98<=), and then typing in ipconfig /all into the command prompt that appears. The details that appear will contain all the addressing rules your computer has, like who its DNS/DHCP server is, whats its IP is etc. If the gateway address is your Wireless Routers IP address, you will need to log into the Wireless Router and turn off DHCP. The DSLmodem should be the only DHCP server on your network.
Also, make sure your modem is plugged into one of the regular switch ports, and not the internet port of the Wireless Router.

I have the same setup myself.

You need to put the 'modem' into bridge mode. You can do this at the setup wizard for the 'modem'

I have had no problems with my setup.
First press the reset button on the modem untill it powers off and wait for it to restart. Connect it to the laptop with the ethernet cable that came with it, I think it is yellow. Then try and connect to the internet, if you see a page that says DSL Connection Successful and asking for your username and pass then your modem is working and setup correctly for BT's service.
Try opening a web page and see if it loads correctly. If it does then your modem is working fine and should give you no problems.

Now connect the modem to the router and restart the router. When it restart try connecting to the internet through it, if it works then you are all set, if not then there is a configuration problem with your router and I cannot help you as I have a different router.

I have a NetGear WPN824P RangeMax MIMO Router. It automaticaly gets an "internet" IP from the modem and routes packets from the internal LAN to the modem which forwards them to the internet.
