just got a call from xtravision there, they said they'd wipe my overdue fees clear with my next rental. fees are €28

anyone else get a call from em?

    don't think i'll bother, 5.75's a fekin rip off.

they must be loosing business....... people downloading movies i guess.

€4's the most i'd pay, and for 2 nights.

It's a short term offer I think. I know a few people that work for them and they mentioned it being on. Everyone is being offered it.

    You're not special.. :p

Dont they have some kind of 5 year plan to remove the rental part of their stores?... or is that just my illusion

No rhyme I'd say your right as all video rentals will be phased out at least before 2012.
With internet2 coming on stream over the next few years both DVDs and VHS for movie rentals will become defunct as will movie stores. Internet2 can transfer data at up to 512GBps or 100,000 times faster than dial up or 5,000 times faster than standard broadband we will never need to purchase again except for spindles of blank DVDs which will soon be able to take up to one terabyte of memory. Eircom had plans to have all this in place in Ireland by "the mid 00's" as far as i can i remember, Magnet networks are vainly trying something similar now. The government privatized Eircom and we are left with the quagmire we have now. As for €5.75 that is one of the biggest rip offs i have ever heard off.

Internet.....2? Did Netwhizkid just make a joke?

    I used to work for Xtravision. It is a complete rip off. Their rental business is probably dropping for a number of reasons;

    The ease of pirating DVDs
The growth in popularity of sites such as amazon etc
Better rental services such as Screenclick and BusyBee
    Sky Digital

In my experience customers were very wary of the price increases that Xtravision imposed every 4 months or so. Basically nearly everyone felt they were being ripped off...not a good way of making customers sticky.

The late fees were another big turn off for people. If the film is 5euro to rent, it will be another 5 euro if you keep it out again.

Most customers who have a bill of 20euro+ would never bother going back to Xtravision because they know they will have to pay it off to get another film out. Xtravision know full well that they will never get the money that is "owed" to them from this large portion of their customer base. So this is obviously a clever little ploy to bring the customers back. Dont expect them to do it again any time soon though.

No i didn't look here and here give this a try too. The future will be bright in internet speed terms anyway, however don't expect to see them in Ireland for a few light years, until we change government anyway. Still not convinced check this out.

I just looked at some of your links Netwhizkid. Sigh. ADSL2 is not Internet "2", it's a faster method of transporting information across WAN's. Besides, I've been reliably informed that London will be among the first cities in the world to receive 100MB broadband in mid 2007 which will clearly require a different technology to ADSL2 which will, by then, be obsolete. Did you think someone was going to throw a switch and the Internet "1" would be switched off?

All the nerdy MITs and unis all over the world have been given a compo of sorts to see wqho can create the "internet2".
The cost of shutting down and restarting the new net is ginormous so dont epect it anytime soon.

OP:Cant wait for the call rented a game then found it behind the dvd player 5 weeksl later ,stuck it in the quickie box and never went back

I don't think you have to wait for a call, the ad is on all the shop windows.

Likewise, I rented a DVD before and was on my way to drop it back, something came up and I just shoved it in the side pocket of the door and there it stayed for a month, so this little offer is of some benefit to me :D

I stopped going to xtravision when i got sky movies.

Too much hassle to go to the shop and then bring the thing back.

I think the only way to save xtravision is for them to do a subscription based service, same as busybee etc.
If they charge even slightly more per month than busybee people would be able to get a dvd every day and not wait for the post.
It would transform the dying xtravision franchise.

Hawhawhaw. THis is so funny. We talking about the same Eircom that is pushing a 4 meg line, and you think the copper system can handle 512GBps? Sounds like that uber 6GHz laptop that you were on about, tbh.

Eh hello they frikkin everywhere selling and competing with Game Hmv and Virgin, in case you hadnt noticed they are cheaper than the above and sell other things too. Someone posted above about cutting the rental, wouldnt be surprised tbh but people will want to rent games to know if its worth 60 odd quid.

They gamnes could be rented in the subs too.

They most definitely are not cheaper than anywhere else.
Have you seen the price of their DVD players?

Why are they trying to compete with Game, HMV and virgin. This is why they are going down the toilet.

High street game selling is going nowhere. People are ordering games far cheaper off the net.

Xtravision are in the perfect position to reinvent the DVD rental market. A subs based walkin dvd rental shop.

I hope not, if the woeful selection i've seen in a few of their stores is anything to go by, its going to be 'britneys greatest hits' all the way.

I for one feel cheated by this offer. I have no outstanding debts with them but if I knew that this was coming I would have spent the last month or so accumulating an account balance which would make Zaire's national debt look manageable.

Extra Vision in Blanchardstown are selling CD's, MP3 players ,dvd players, phones !

But I must admit i haven't rented a DVD in about 4-5 months now. I just think the price is a rip off and there isn't much good out recently that I have wanted to see. Considering i used to rent out at least 2 movies a week before !

average rate of 5.11 gigabits per second.
Thats only about 100x slower than what he claimed "Internet2" would be. I'm disappointed. Even his own links can't back up his claim.

Should i also point out that no home computer in the next decade or so would be able to process that much data in that amount of time. (my own estimate).
