Does number of posts make a difference?

I was just reading through a variety of threads on Boards.ie, and something struck me. Posters with high numbers of posts seem to get more respect and less flames. Ok, ok, I know this is obvious, but I was wondering if it was right?

What do ya'all think? Should number of posts matter, or join date, or should we all just listen to whats being said in the post?

i dont know, and tbh i dont really care, some people have joined years ago and have a couple of posts where as some have joined last april and have over a thousand now.

Cloud the site admin has less posts than me, but he knows more about the place than i do.

No i think it's wrong to judge people on their post count/join date.

In reality it does happen though. There are many gangs on Boards that will side with each other. You will also get along better with certain members and get off to a bad start with others.

It can't be helped though when you get somebody new who is just acting the prick, flaming is the only answer!...also some new members seem to think they can command the ears of everyone else and get flustered if they are ignored. Some also think they are entitled to command drastic changes to boards...people like this will be ignored and dismissed as an ignorant noob

Generally I go by what's said in the post tbh.

it's ridiculous but probably true. Imagine applying it to real life though. Those who waffled and talked non-stop would get more respect.lol.

thats an example of quite possibly the stupidest inter-nerd talk i've ever laid eyes on

this on the other hand, is common sense at its best

    You're observation is correct.
However, I don't think that it's a question of morality. It's culture or instinct: There's very little to establish ethos-people will take whatever they can.
I'd say postcount means something to you, from the effort applied increasing it. Ahem.

Personally, I'll go by the content of the post. Occasionally, some posts are borderline and the postcount may influence my opinion a very small bit (I can only think of one scenario really: "is this a troll?" Clearly, it is not the sole defining factor )

If search was enabled, i would have been able to back up my point..but i can't, maybe you should ask for an elaboration in future instead of criticizing?

A few weeks ago, here on AH, a guy made his first post. He immediately said he was "pretty happy" with Boards but there should be swift changes made. He then went on to say how animals/pets, vegetarian forum ect should be deleted because he didn't think they looked good.

A few posts later he began to tell everyone on that thread that they should reply quicker to him and that it is of "extreme importance" that in future he gets quicker replies

That guy was an asshole. Yes el rabitos he commanded our ears and called for drastic changes. He was subsiquently banned

" " whats your point?

let me refer you back to -

if someone is talking rubbish....maybe ignore the person?
someone with 5000 posts can go on a rant talking rubbish and bugging people as much as someone with 5, does 5000 posts = boards maturity?

Well from the looks of it my point was clear. I was elaborating on my previous point that you so nicely dismissed as "inter-nerd talk"

I did say some new members, i already posted about how you shouldn't judge by post count/join date.

a tad dramatic no? how dare we lend him our ears.

threads started by fools or ones with people talking rubbish usually fizzle out fast enough. i dont think thats what the op was talking about in general.

Yes like your sizzling "eek" in the last post...grow up please and stop picking stupid things out to start pointless arguements...

Dramatic yeah you have me there, what can i say :D

Yeah i agree, i was just making that small point in the context that some new users post things to that standard and in return are flamed. I know what you mean, the op would be more concentrated on for example a '98 member towards a '05 ect.

    lol.....

post counts shouldnt make a difference but they do. i know i for one will be more wary of buying from someone with a low post count.....

grow up?? but i'm only on 250 posts or something, i'm nowhere near 5000 :) jk

i can see how it could be relevant there, but sure its always a bit of a risk buying online and from relative stragers

Yeah i'd agree with that. From the buying perspective, it wouldn't be wise to buy from a very low poster because at least with a high poster you can look through their history and probably get some insight into what they're really like...but there's always a risk

I would have much more respect for someone with alot of posts and an early join date. You have people with plenty of posts but who joined within the last year, not all of those posts will be of a good quality, alot may be
    nice one, lol
    type posts.
And I'd also have more respect from someone who is a mod, it shows they're not a 14 year old asshole who just got broadband.

    Quick answer = No.

People who have been around longer just know the rules better or are a bit more diplomatic.

There are some people who post a lot but have got nothing to say really

Whats the bet that Tar Aldarion will post in this thread. That boy has nothing but crap to say the majority of the time (I'll post a link to one of the threads if you want proof) , and says it about everything. His post count is about 6,500 and he's only joined about a year if even. Its hard to give someone like that respect.

I also remember some guy called User 4365 or something. When it used to show your post count and posts per day, he always had about 50 posts per day! Thats just blatant racking up posts.

Half of the above are probably posted in the Humour Forum just posting "lol" or "Good one, haha".

People with low post counts, about less than 50 aren't taken as seriously because some can be just trolls. IMO though, I go on what the poster is saying, not how many posts or join day or whether they are a mod or not.

    Edit:
Soz Laf, didn't see the part u posted. Great minds though eh!

If someone insults you about your post and calls you a nerd, well thats their problem and you should ignore them.

I do believe high posters get more respect but I have come across one poster with a massive amount of threads who was banned. So there you go!

As for animal threads etc being banned, I dont agree, a lot of people on the boards dont give a sh*te about computers and are only on for recreational things other than comptuters. So having this boards topics limited would be absolutely annoying for a lot of people.

Well in fairness I do a fair amount of "Hahaha, that was great" etc myself but only when required e.g. the Humour forum.

I post alot of stuff in the film forum, games forum, etc, and whilst I'm not saying everyone of my posts is a shining pearl of wisdom they are perfectly valid and in most cases not unlike the responses of the rest of the given thread.

I think as well with Tar Aldarion he is a bit like me, so far as that rather then trolling, posting crap or whatever it is you refer to it as, its a love and addiction to boards that seems to grow on you.

Some of us like boards more then others. It doesn't mean we post crap 24/7....

I remember that guy. He didn't even use proper english, let alone any puncuation or caps and had about 2,000 posts after a month. What ever happened him?

I'm a regular poster in Humour and I take exception to that remark.

The whole purpose of that forum is light hearted entertainment.
If someone goes to the trouble of posting a joke what's wrong with posting an appreciative lol or haha?
It encourages further posting. It's a social thing.

I find it much more acceptable than some of the flame wars on other forums.

Post count shouldnt matter on boards. But unfortunatly it kinda does..as it is really the only thing that is visible and where they live and join date. But granted there are ppl with high post count that talk sh**e and some low posters that talk a lot of sense. But a lot of noobs do talk crap sometimes, But you cant lump them all into 1 group though.. it depends on the what they are posting.

As for the buying point brought up.. post count can be very important there and naturally you will be weary buying off some one with no previous sales to check... thats only natural

You missed my point, I said that "half of the above are probably.....". I post haha etc, but I dont do it as an easy way to boost my post count, nor do you Hagar by the looks of things so there is no need to feel insulted.
