How many ppl have been to a debs and thought it was a waste of money . Mine was on friday nite in a place before ennis called the clare inn wat a pile of crap it was , we got served veggie soup for starters and it was like vommit , then there was chicken for mains which was cold and beef also which was too tough.
The best thing was the ice-cream that came with the afters. There was no alcohol only water , No drink at a debs wat a joke, cost like 200 euro and it was a pile of crap..

    I voted no.

Out of curiosity, do you think a wedding is a waste of money?

    no not a wedding

    Any reason why?

im on about a debs not a wedding

Big difference. At a wedding, they actually respect you spending your money there, and weddings are always better occasions. Hotels really treat the debutants quite poorly in general in my experience.

No way are they a rip off in any sense ......

They are an introduction to the ways of the Irish economy and adulthood :p

Family member owns a hotel and heard some pretty bad stories about deb's in how the place gets wrecked. But then again stick 100+ people in a room with alcohol and its gonna happen one way or another.

I didn't really enjoy my debs. It was ok, nothing great. Glad I went but not something I would really miss terribly.

Having worked in a bar for weddings for around three years, thats only true in a small number of cases where individuals can't handle their drink.

Unlike Debs, where you put 100 individuals who can't handle drink in a room...

    Re: Debs/Grads

Having a grads without drink is stupid. It sounds like the organisers were really paranoid. I don't know the Clare Inn, how big is it? - most debs/grads are celebrated at hotels as far as I know. And €200 seems way WAY too steep for any "ball" type event - I bet the organisers got the night for free.
I'm 24 and I still have really fond memories of my grads - it should be one of the best nights of the life (up to that point)

    Re: Weddings

Some of my colleagues and friends are getting married over the coming year - the average price they are paying is €40,000 for the day. It IS an important day, but to spend 40 grand is outrageous.

I'll answer this thread properly in about 2 months after the debs. But, doesnt really make much of a differance to me since I'm a stingy bastard and didnt pay for my ticket. Still have to get a tux though.

In terms of what you get for your money, it's definitely a waste.
However, I reckon if you still manage to enjoy yourself despite the overall crapness of debs in general, it's worth paying the money for the tickets in return for a good night out with all your school friends (in many cases the debs is the last time everyone will be together in the same place).

A rip-off? Yes. A pile of crap? No.

Never got to/got a chance to go to the Debs so my opinion is based on word-of-mouth. Seems like a fantastic excuse to dress up and see people get famously drunk.

I chose not to go to my debs... and I'm glad I didn't go. The whole concept just doesn't interest me.

Probably technically a rip off, but so what. Its once in your life, your debs.

I had an amazing night, that ran form 8 in the evening to 8 the next morning.

    I'll never forget it!! :D

So yeah, its definately worth it imo.

i went to 3 and the first one was the only one i really enjoyed. i dont think theyr a waste of money but after the 2nd time they get a bit monotonous! my first was in the ardboyne in navan---id give it 8/10, second was the ambassador, naas---5/10 and the last one just ok. and i organised it! certain groups of people just wrecked it! music was kkkkrap! i didnt do that cos i would of got a proper dj! music is a key ingredient!

mine was ok, nothing special even though food/venue etc. was good. It didn't end 'till 3:30 and it started at 8 - i was fookin knackerd(wanting sleep not drunk) at that stage.

it's not good value for money, mine cost 165 for an ok time, where you could have a great night out for a *lot* less than that on any given weekend.

certainly not the fantastic night it's made out to be

    Debs are overrated.

But a College Grad Ball is much, much better! Probably because you actually like the majority of your class, whereas a lot of the people in your year at school were a pack of arseholes.

Well, from my experience anyways :)

The same with me. Seemed like too much hassle at the time.

great fun at mine. it was legendary. how did it cost 200. in my day it was 20 quid for a ticket , one for me, one for her (40), tuxedo (25), flower thing for her (10)

£75 (as it was back then)
factoring in inflation and blatant greed, i can now see how €200 is managable

I had mine in the Clare Inn in 2001 and the place got absolutely wrecked, people who were not part of the debs crashed the place, there was one case were a guy fell through a sky light in the girls jacks into a cubicle where a girl was... welll you know.. The sinks were pulled off the walls, as were the urinals. I guess this is why there was no drink, it's madening as the people who did this were not even part of the debs, they were friends of the 'minority' of knackers that were at it... You know the crowd.
