My bank acccount is in my english name "James O'Flynn" (sample name)
someone who likes Irish decided to make a cheque for me payable to "Seamus O'Floinn" (or whatever the exact spelling is, I don't have it in front of me here)

Will my bank let me lodge this to my account?

If it's an Irish bank account you should be fine, I lodged a cheque that was (bizzarely) made out in my Irish name from the Revenue and had no hassle. Do you have any ID with your Irish name on it? Might be handy in case of grief.

shouldn't be a problem, most will apply common sense.
