There's a nasty story going around at the moment that due to poor ticket sales the Pixies gig in Lansdowne Road may be cancelled. Rumour has it they only sold about 13,000 tickets.

Where did you hear this nasty rumour. It better not be true or else....

    Reaches for big beating stick.

Where did you hear about this nasty rumour....? Would they still be pimping it on the radio and the multi-tickets if they were planing on canceling it...?

Where did you hear that? A friend of a friend knows this guy who overheard a promoter's conversation?

A large portion of the audience at last years Luke Warm Chilli Peppers gig in Phoenix Park were there specifically for the Pixies; they'll have no difficulty filling Landsdowne Road.

I went to the Phoenix Park last year just to see them, but I have absolutly no intention of paying the 60 euro or whatever, to see them play mostly the same stuff. and I know of a few people the same.

Yeah imagine a band repeating anything!!!

I'm the same. I'd really like to see them but Lansdowne Road is a terrible venue for them. Marlay Park may have been better.

Anyway my source is someone who works pretty high up in the stadium. There's a meeting about it on Wednesday apparently when a final decision will be taken.

This better not be true! If they cancel I'll go mad. I'm such a huge fan :(

I would be very surprised if that rumour was true. If tickets sales were going that badly it would have been cancelled before now anyway.
I think there are still a lot of people out there who want to see the Pixies and support in Kings of Leon is pretty strong too, so I would expect a decent crowd

Too close to the date to cancel and it's part of Bud Rising for which there is a 4 gig ticket, if one cancels then they woulda been better gettin 3 single tickets!

would they not just move it to a smaller venue? That would make a bit more sense

they can play at my place, it'll hold 13,000 no probs. Nice n cozy.

gigs aren't cancelled because of poor ticket sales, "scheduling conflicts", "throat infections" are usually the reasons.

anyone know how are the well the Scissor Sisters/Franz Ferdinand gig is selling then?

Gigs are cancelled for poor ticket sales all the time but not usually this close to the event. I suppose if to actually stage the event would cost much more than they could hope to make back theyd possibly pull it but theyd get some major negative PR. You could imagine the backlash to the Budweiser "The music needs you" campaign if they screwed this up.

It wont be relocated thats for sure. I cant see any venue that could hold 13k people being arranged this quickly. There are no indoor venues in Dublin that can hold that much and outdoor venues require planning permission.

Im pretty confident its going to go ahead. As someone pointed out theyd have a pretty good idea weeks in advance if things were going to go sour and cancelling this close to the event must cost them huge penalities to the band and venue. The only savings would be staff/staging costs and even then they may be obliged to fulfill contracts. Perhaps they are going to revise security / gardai requirments in light of the lower numbers and thats what these "mysterious meetings" are about.

This is speculation of course I've no idea of the budget impact of running a low selling event but compared to the amount of money theyd also lose on licensing food and drink stalls, merchandising and an inevitable last minute ticket purchases Id say the difference between cancelling and going with it at this stage must not be that big.

It would make more sense to perhaps give away the remaining tickets in a text to win competition (if there was masses of winners people would enter lots) and go ahead with the gig. I mean its not like a whole rabble of text happy teenagers arriving at a pixies gig with no idea who they are would ruin it for the rest of us.... oh wait.

Look they arent going to cancel and that's it.Sure they're making a new album, they're going to plug that there, and KOL could possibly pull it off on their own-some, and drag someone else in at the last minute.

They're not cancelling. The gig is definately going ahead. 100%.

This is because I have bought my tickets, and have arranged my accomodation and travel. I have decided. Let me hear no more talk of cancellation..! :p

Hopefully that doesn't happen - I'd rather watch them in a mostly empty stadium then have a load of people turn up with free tickets and no appreciation. Could actually be quite cool having no troubles getting up near the front of the stage - but wouldn't bode well for future Pixies visits to Ireland I guess...

Stupid day of the week to have it on tbh.

Yeah, who has an outdoor gig on a tuesday??
lucky i was given the day off (actually i requested it in the interview - cheeky me :D )
I really doubt it will get cancelled... although if it did it would be due to "sore throat" or somethin silly like that.
But it won't. It shan't and it won't!

It's not cancelled but they have closed all of the upper stands to save costs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 765 ✭✭✭Smurfpiss

Does that mean that if any (idiot) person bought one of those tickets that they are now on a lower stand? or on the pitch? did anyone even buy a stand ticket?
