I'm in the market for a new amp at the moment and naturally I don't want to pay Irish prices, so I'm thinking about buying one from thomann or koln. I was wondering though, am I going to have to buy a transformer in order to use it? I've heard they can get hot so will that limit my playing time?

you dont need a transformer but a europe to UK/IRL plug converter will be helpful (its just 2 pin in, 3 pin out - like this ), they cost about 5 squid in maplin.

I bought my amp from a german site and it has worked without a hitch since

You don't need a transformer for "EU" amps.

    Get hot?

What do you mean? Are you buying a tube amp?

    europe to UK/IRL plug converter

    True.

    Cut the European Plug off
Put on a Standard three pin plug with a 13 Amp fuse and you should be fine.

Yeah, I'm gonna be buying a tube amp (most likely a fender). From what I understand, the transformers can get hot and risk blowing a fuse. That might only be a problem with UK to US transformers?

    No, all transformers get hot.

The whole EU has the same power specs. Anything from outside the EU (Austrilia/US/etc) needs a transformer otherwise you're flying
