the longest meaningful word in the english dictionary is

    ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM

the word is used to describe the state of opinion of people who are against the motion of others (especially an organisation) to deprive another oganisation (such as a national church) of its official status, to the best of my knowledge.

if you go into the realm of science and chemistry however you will find that some chemicals have names that are made up of in excess of 80 letters; but for all intensive purposes of the english language... these can be excluded.

this is a descriptive term for the disease pneumoconiosus. its composed of every term which is required to describe the causative agent including its relative size and place of origin, the affected organ, and reveals the primary symptoms of the disease. its simply a protraction of the true medical term. however, it is the longest word ever to appear in a non-technical dictionary (Oxford English Dictionary). well done!

    Hmm.
The text that you have entered is too long (189819 characters). Please shorten it to 10000 characters long.
:( The chemical name of the protein also known as Titin is 189819 letters long though.

who the f*ck comes up with these names?? nobody would ever be able to pronounce that, its impossible.

There's a forumla for coming up with the name based on the chemical structure, it pretty much writes itself. Grand when your dealing with potassium chloride, okay when you're dealing with para-dichloro-diphenyltrichloroethane, though we still abbreviate that to DDT for convenience sake, but in the case of very large proteins (and titin is the longest protein known) it gets a bit cumbersome. The pronounciation follows simple rules though, so it wouldn't be hard, as long as you could pause to breathe in and maybe sip some water.

Still, they don't necessarily lack poetical use:

A mosquito cried out in his pain,
"A chemist has poisoned my brain!"
    The cause of his sorrow
    Was para-dichloro-
    Diphenyltrichloroethane.

(I think that was written by one John Cowan, but I'm not sure, I'll ask him).

Grosser that word sounds very sexual, as in, shagged to death..

Anyway, go over to Wales. They have place names like:

    thisisthelongestnameforavillagewecouldthinkofjustsowecanbefamousforsomethingapartfromourstupidleeksville.

    Smiles tbh.

    Why?

because there is a "mile" between the first and last letters.

I asked him. It wasn't. He doesn't know who it was (Please don't sue me for breech of copyright Mr. or Ms. Mosquito Poem Writer).

IIRC the longest word in the world is some Sweedish word thats 238 letters long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,287 ✭✭✭NotMe

It really depends on the width of the letters I think.

Yep, that's much longer than the 189819-letter word mentioned earlier.
