the longest meaningful word in the english dictionary is

the word is used to describe the state of opinion of people who are against the motion of others (especially an organisation) to deprive another oganisation (such as a national church) of its official status, to the best of my knowledge.

if you go into the realm of science and chemistry however you will find that some chemicals have names that are made up of in excess of 80 letters; but for all intensive purposes of the english language... these can be excluded.

There's a forumla for coming up with the name based on the chemical structure, it pretty much writes itself. Grand when your dealing with potassium chloride, okay when you're dealing with para-dichloro-diphenyltrichloroethane, though we still abbreviate that to DDT for convenience sake, but in the case of very large proteins (and titin is the longest protein known) it gets a bit cumbersome. The pronounciation follows simple rules though, so it wouldn't be hard, as long as you could pause to breathe in and maybe sip some water.

Still, they don't necessarily lack poetical use:

A mosquito cried out in his pain,
"A chemist has poisoned my brain!"
The cause of his sorrow
Was para-dichloro-
Diphenyltrichloroethane.
