It Happens Everyday - Random violence on our streets

I heard a shocking story from a mate today.. He was walking town Henry Street with his sister yesterday browsing the shops.
For no reason at all, 4 little scumbags in their early to mid teens approached his sister and one of them headbutted her in the stomach and shouted "ya whore" before they all ran away.
They didnt take anything, and my mate couldnt chase them as he attended to his sister making sure she was ok/
This is the same mate who got headbutted himself for no reason walking down O'Connell Street at half five one evening by another little scumbag - same again - nothing taken, just a random attack.

I know everyone has a story to tell, if it's either themselves or a close friend or family member that has been affected.

I myself was jumped on 2 years ago when walking home late on night with a mate from town. Luckily, we were more sober than the 2 who attacked and we managed to fight them off.

So I ask you, post your story here to see what the streets of Dublin, or any other town / city in Ireland are coming to. So little of these crimes get reported, as we have enough "high profile" crimes now to fill the newspaper columns.

I hope this is found an interesting thread at the state of random violence and the total lack of respect that has grown over the past couple of decades...

(I thought I'd also add a poll here for interest).

Have you, a member of your family, or a close friend ever been randomly attacked? 144 votes

I've never been attacked or anything. I generally avoid it in the first place.

I avoid it as best I can, but I was attacked once in Sutton Dart Station. Technically it was a mugging, as I had beer with me, and that's what they supposedly wanted. But when I got a few metres away with the beer still in my posession they seemed satisfied with the punch they got in. Bayside nacks.

I'm fairly lucky in so far as i havent been attacked, im too young to be going out to many places so that might change.

A very interesting thread over in humanities i think about random violence and why people get attacked over others, well worth the read.

Seems to be about attitude and so forth.

For an assault / random attack, I'd think male would be higher. I just think it's mostly male who initiate the attack, and they would more likely attack others males.

However, an assult of a sexual nature would (in most cases) be female.

For robbery/theft, it's likely to be fairly even I think.

thanks, that thread's actually really interesting to read, and it's also very complex!

I was attacked in Killiney dart station at about 11 at night once a couple of months ago by two complete scumbags. No apparent reason apart from maybe my rocker style clothing, which they tend to dislike... Though i say attacked one of the guys came up to me an started pushin me an i saw his mate comin too so i promptly decked the first guy an surprised myself in knockin him out cold, at which his mate got scared an ran over, apologised over an over, said his mate was drunk an dragged im off by his feet, which was the funniest thing i've possibly ever seen :D

On that note a friend of mine (female) was once randomly attacked and quite severely beaten i.e. broken legs, collarbone etc.

    I don't think it matters...

Read something a while ago about random attacks and muggings etc. Basically, people who don't look confident have a far greater chance of being attacked. Ideally, walk with head held high but still avoid prolonged eye contact with any scumbag. Always rely on your gut feeling, if it feels wrong it generally is so find a way out of the situation before it happens if possible.

Two guys tried to mug me earlier on in the year. One tried to pull my rucksack off my back while the other one tried to grab my phone out of my hand.

The knack grabbing my phone stupidly pulled away from me while we were both still holding my phone, thus leaving his rear end exposed.

I actually lifted him off the ground with my foot.

Needless to say, they didn't manage to take anything, and ran off down Blessington street with me screaming "YOU GOBSH!TES!" after them.

I got beaten up my some bloke for essentialy no reason when I was 15 but that's a much longer and less funny story.

My cousin got whacked over the head by a bowling ball in leisure plex, he was instantly knocked out and the doctor in st vincents hospital said he was lucky the ball was a kid sized ball, if it had of been a full size he could of been killed.

a mate of mine was stabbed with a broken bottle for no reason.luckily they caught the scumbag who did it, before he did again to someone else-apparently he had been convicted twice before for doing the exact same thing to other people

I've been mugged a few times, and attacked once....but the attack didn't injure me at all, so it's the mugging that I was pissed off about (got my phone taken on one occasion, money on 2 others).

On 2/3 of these occasion I was outnumbered and on the other he was just a giant, well known scumbag...

I'd imagine they picked me out for several reasons, the long hair, clothes etc, but moreso the fact that no-one was nearby...

Actually, you know what, let's go into rant mode :)

    [offtopicrant]
What pisses me off about these guys is that it's not usually actual poor guys or travellers doing the mugging. I'm not rich or poor, but I know for a fact that some of the guys who go around taking people money/phones etc have more money than me. On the other hand I know a few actual travellers, and they'd never rob a person (they might rob sweets from a shop or someone, but that doesn't really hurt anyone). So it really pisses me off that shams get away with this sort of thing, I walk through an alleyway to get home which is associated with scumbags hanging around their at night, and yet not once have I seen a garda nearbye..
    [/offtopicrant]

However, other than give useless rants and account my experiences I think I may be able to offer a little bit of advice to people who fear getting robbed.

Guide to not getting mugged :) :
    1. Travel in large groups of people (obvious but sometimes not possible)
    2. Avoid places you think scumbags might hang out (most times I've encountered shams I wouldn't have if I had taken a longer route to where I was going).
    3. If you're outnumbered and don't feel you have a good chance of getting away by running, act like a pussy, forget your machoness if your a guy, if you're a girl then you should be ok in these situations (unless you have a bad temper).
    4. Hide anything valuable in pockets near your ass/crotch if you're a guy (scumbags are extremely homophobic), if you're a girl hide them in your shoe if possible.
    5. This one only really applies to guys; if you end up getting into a fight, only fight if you think you have a chance, otherwise concentrate on defending yourself.

Might be useless stuff that you already know, or it might save you from having to buy a new phone!

A friend of mine had to walk through a pretty bad area home from work a few years ago. His method worked really well (for him) - When approaching groups of scum while walking, as he got to them he would in his best scum accent ask for a smoke. He never got attacked once. It kinda makes you one of them, he generally got a "no, sorry bud" response and that was it. Wouldnt recommend this as such, could backfire!

    man, that's scary stuff.
I hope your mate wasnt too badly hurt.

Some of the posts here are, unfortunately, as I expected.
It's just mad the stuff that goes on.

I've never been attacked, mugged or anything at all, and I've walked the streets of Limerick in every concievable state at every hour of the morning, by myself. Anytime I'm asked for a smoke, I just say "Sorry, I don't smoke" and that's the end of it, or anytime I'm asked for change I give a euro or something. At the same time I know guys who get attacked/mugged on regular occasions (once maybe twice a year). So there is definately something to the way you carry yourself.

I was attempted to be mugged several times before, both times I was outnumbered but they didnt manage to take anything because they spotted more lucrative targets in the distance.

I've never been randomly attacked thankfully, but I know a load of people who have

When i was about 15. i was in a group of people, and this scumbag came up, and hit my mate in the face for no reason. he just swung his foot straight up and got him in the face. he then ran off. It was just pointless.

But did anyone see that slaphappy show om tv? they were going on about how scumbags will now just look at someone and if they look stupid attack them and film it on their phone.

One group of guys filmed themselves setting a guy asleep at a busstop on fire.

was a disturbing show but very interesting
