Hows this for a concept, a site for teachers, where they get to rate their pupils in a similiar fashion, and in a nicely indexed form for all future employers. Nice.

    arent they called 'school reports'?

its a great site you can see the trend on certain teachers that its not just one student that hates that teacher the ones that hate teaching and for also praising some of the great teachers out there

I think its a brilliant site. Its not like all students are just out to get teachers on it. If you look you can see the really good teachers that have gained respect from their students. We talk to our teachers about it in school and all the sound ones dont mind it.............its only d crap teachers who hate it cuz they know deyr gonna get bad ratings!!!!!!

That Rate My Teachers site is the stupidest, most idiotic site I've ever come across. It's such a waste of bloody space.

Think of it like this - real twat of a kid gets told off for not doing his homework, what does he do - runs off like the dope that he is and rates the teacher really low. So if you even correct a child who is in the wrong, they will think that the teacher is out to get them and rate the teacher really bad.

Totally bloody stupid, I can see why teachers are getting pissed off over it.

it has to be moderated well and my schools is because my best friend does it! and because its a past student they know if the comment is just by some bastard or not.its quite easy to see what teachers are good or not.there is a teacher with 4.9 out of 5 in my school that everybody in the school hates yet yes she was a class teacher.

How about this for a spin-off of that site that wouldn't have the problems...

It's the same as ratemyteachers.ie is now, except with the following changes
    - Only the teachers can see the comments. There'd have to be some way of verifying who the teacher actually is though...
    - It's still completely anonymous. Set up the server not to record IPs that access the rating pages (it's gotta be possible...)
    - The number ratings are shown publicly
    - Meta-moderation (like on slashdot) to keep the mods in line.. maybe random selection of moderations that are sent to site administrators or something for review...

    might work a little better...

<edit>OR, instead of only the teachers seeing the ratings, they're sent to the school (preferably the principal or board of management) via email on a monthly basis...... (like a report card that's sent home to parents :D ) </edit>

Honestly there are plenty of teachers out there who can't teach. And yet they still have jobs. I have came across quite a number of them in my time and heard about many many more. OK maybe this site isn't the way to go. But I do believe in teacher's being monitored in some fashion. In most jobs if you can't do your job your fired. Seemingly not so if your a teacher. Some of the teachers I was taught by were unable to maintain order (OK fair enough students as much to blame here but in this day and age it comes with the job) and they had no natural teaching ability what so ever-
Maths teacher writing up reams and reams of maths and reading it out to the class is not teaching - In my school however seemingly it was.
Irish teachers - One spent the class telling stories of days gone by
    - Another one translates a few lines of Irish text and bingo
magically you know everything there is to know.

Honestly some teachers we had were fantastic, some of the best.
But we had some terrible ones too there needs to be a system in place to evaluate teachers much like the students are. Students often are only as good as how they are taught.

    My 2c...

Rate my Teachers isn't a bad idea. It may help draw attention to all the god awful ones out there as well as show who the greats are; 5 of my 7 teachers are so shockingly tragic I've spent the last two years building up to my leaving constructing different torture methods for them in my mind, I'd blame my not so super progress on them if i weren't so lazy to begin with. Although bad teaching does considerably hinder students' performance. My parents are teachers and rated quite well on the site :) (Not that this makes a difference, they're just good at what they do). Just goes to show the site isn't just for the purpose of slandering teachers if some "real twat of a kid gets told off for not doing his homework, what does he do - runs off like the dope that he is and rates the teacher really low". It's just an honest evaluation of teachers' capabilities in the classroom in the majority of cases.

Which, to my knowledge (I'd like people to jump in here if they know differently) are not available to the public, and what a shame that is.

It's bull****. The third best school's lowest rated teacher has an average of 3.9/5. Yeah, right.

hmmmm a few comments/reviews have definately not been posted up for who knows why

i have a deplorable teacher who deserves no more than a 1 out of 5 and had something stupid like 3 or 4 out of 5, it has some odd moderating, some harsher but not rude comments havent been allowed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,534 ✭✭✭Blisterman

As a moderator it's easy to tell if someones just getting back at a teacher. Usually be referring to her looks, which is against the rules of the site, or by saying they're a nazi or something.

How long has it been since the comments were submitted? Because it can take up to a week some times for the comments to come through on the Mods account, then the mod has up to four days before they have to rate their comments...

I checked this out last night, and had a look at my old school. Seems like a lot of licks rate the teachers, since even the assholes/psycho-bitches were getting good remarks. Or maybe I was just too much of a messer during my academic time. ;)

you were taught by 60 or 70 teachers? you must have changed class a lot.

My school has astonishingly high ratings, and while there were some absolutely terrific teachers there, there were some terrible ones too. How can a teacher whose concept of teaching is coming in late every day, sitting at his desk reading from the textbook in a monotone and then leaving the instant the bell goes get an average rating of 4+? My school had quite a few of these 'teachers' who had no interest in teaching and were simply going through the motions, most students in the class would literally struggle to keep their eyes open during the class. Amazingly, they all have 4+ average ratings and have comments describing them as "inspirational" and "brilliant philosophers". In the pub or in the teachers lounge, maybe. Not in the classroom.

thats the point i was driving at, suspiciousy high ratings all round

I think its all quite funny. Teachers spend their whole life marking other people, and now when the shoe's on the other foot....

Oh yes, and they expect to get their big fat benchmarked pay rises as of divine right. Apparently only one teacher has been dismissed for incompetence since benchmarking came in.

Any pay rise I've ever got I've been reviewed/rated fairly stringently in order to get it like most people in non-public sector employment. Teachers apparently are above all that.

I'm afraid curiosity got the better of me and I had a look at my old school on ratemyteachers.ie which I attended back in the neolithic era (well later 70s to early 80s anyway).

I can remember seeing this guy
    http://www.ratemyteachers.ie/ShowRatings.php?tid=14479&type=0
punch a 15 year-old boy so hard in the head that he was rendered unconscious. This was back around 1979/1980 I think when this sort of thing was still nice and legal. He'd quite deservedly get sacked/arrested for that nowadays.

(Mods - this isn't libel or slander - it's just what I witnessed)

Well, you could never put that on the site, its against the rules to put anything like that, but if thats true, thats crazy that he got away with it.

As I say it was perfectly legal for them to beat the crap out of you back then. Of course from 4th year onwards when you were big enough to hit back the balance of power shifted a bit. But even in 5th year I saw full blooded punches delivered to guys heads.

I have to say that in the cases of my old teachers, the comments on that site are pretty much spot on.

pretty accurate for my old school too

very accurate for my old school too. i half expected people to just slag off every teacher but praise was given where due and the bad teachers were given very stern criticisms
