Spiders!

Came home from work, sister has been waiting up for me.

"Theres a massive spider on my bed!"

So I go up with a bit of paper to kill him so I can flush him down the toilet. But - holy shit

This was one huge spider. I mean seriously. It was easily three inches long and three wide. Biggest I've ever seen up close.

Took me about ten minutes to edge closer like the wuss I am and slay him.

This is seriously freaky, I mean it was huge.

So my question is, what are the habits of spiders? Do they hang around in groups? My question being, would it be likely for there to be more of them hanging around my sisters room? And where do they come from? Its an upstairs room.

I'd be freaked out if I woke up and saw one of them ANYWHERE near me! I don't care for the normal small spiders but this one literally scared me.

    Take a photo next time.

Usually big female spiders have a nest. Maybe there's a nest of spiders under her bed feeding on crumbs etc. Or maybe not. Do a big clean up in the room. Also, check the windws and ceilings for cracks etc. maybe that's point of entry.

On a side note, i think it's wrong to go around killing spiders because they're on your bed. A jam jar would have done the job there. COuld have popped it outside. Rememeber Spiders kill and eat insects you'd find much more annoying.

There are other ways to get rid of it then to kill it. Jar, cover it with paper, open window and empty the jar. Nobody is harmed. He didn't want to be there as much as you didn't want him there. Try and remember that before you kill any more.

There are probably a few hundred in your house right now. Eggs are layed by the thousands. They may end up coming out at night to crawl all over your bed and of course they would end up on your face up your nose and mouth, so sleep under the covers. Not that that would help much because they can get under the covers, you will simply have to learn to live with them. Living [strike]off[/strike] on you.

Also i recommend a circumcision, they can lay eggs in your foreskin.

Thanks, we are going to check everywhere now. I'm honestly going to admit I am scared, this one was huge, if there are more then one....argh. I've a freak thing about large spiders. Don't even get me started on my sister.

I understand that but right now I'd bring a flamethrower into my room if I thought it would keep me safe

Horrible thoughts. I actually nearly break down in tears when I see one, can't handle it. At all. Maybe its actually a phobia, its not just finding them icky, I go to pieces. I actually have to get the girlfriend to dispose of them (she won't kill them though). God, sad!

If I find anymore I will take some pictures before I kill them.

Hmmmm...... heard of these guys, they are a newish species that spread to europe on container ships from the far east.

    Was it black?

From your description I reckon its the same. That was a smallish one but they live in big colonies. The are not dangerous unless about 3 sting you......

    Haha, im the same,

Im 6'2" and not afraid of anything really :p

But if i see a spider in my room thats it, couch for me. I just go to pieces
Even if i think i see something moving on the ground i jump, any other insects are fine.

As a rule there are house spiders and outside spiders, both are compleltely different.
90% of spiders in your house were always there and didn't come from outside. Outside isn't their natural habitat. It would be like finding a cat in your house and throwing it in a swamp.

Putting it oustide isn't particularly humane.

Thanks for the info. Do they hang in groups? Do they have like a center they originate from in the house, generally speaking?

    Theyre only feckin spiders!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,461 ✭✭✭DrIndy

    they're everywhere.

They also grow very quickly and are partial to human flesh when in large numbers.

yes Sangre. Spiders evolved over the last 100 years to be house dependant. Someones being watching too much X-men.

anyway, the spider sounds like dolomedes fimbriatus, google it. i wouldn't worry about it.

The jist of that link was house spiders are used to warm climates and leaving them out doors more than likely will kill them.

Anyway, the spider in question is not a typical house spider.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,867 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Well it's definitely better to throw them outside then to kill them. At least if they are thrown outside they can find a crack in the wall and make their way on their journey to find a mate.

I do generally just leave them be. I had one spider in the corner of my room for ages. There is a flag hanging down from the ceiling in the corner and he lived in that. Not a bother:)

I wouldnt really care if it was a normal small one.

Its just it was so frickin big.

Me and the sister did a quick scan of both my and her room, no rubbish on ground, both rooms are clean and seem to be fairly spider free....

Shes sleeping in the spare room now though...

I wish I hadn't clicked on that link. We get loads of big spiders in our house in late summer/early autumn. Now it seems that they're around all year, just in hiding :(

    So you're agreeing with me?

And I assume its not a house spider anyway.

Until they sting you and your foot falls off.......

    Bad news, bad news.....

Sounds very big for something that is irish and may not be one of those imported ones from asia.

Could it have been a scorpion? If you swatted it quick, you may have made a mistake....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

Spiders in america does not equal spiders in ireland.

Well according to the above link provided, they don't want food. That's why they are in the house. They are only looking for a mate. And don't worry, they are hardly going to start humping your toe in the middle of the night. Just let them be. Let nature take its cause. Sure it's happening in your house right now.. in the cracks in the walls, above you in the attic. It's been happening since before you were born and will continue after you die. It's something you're going to have to live with. Can't we all just live in harmony?

unless they're tarantulas that escaped from a collection.....

There must be nest somewhere I guess....

I remember seeing one in the kitchen downstairs now that I think about it, a few months back.

I also saw one in the sitting room, a big one, although I am not positive it was the same type, as my west highland terrier ran over to it, bit it until it was dead and dropped it on the floor and went back to her basket.

    I'm scaring myself.
