Does ADSL2 means ADSL modem redundancies?

I use a Netgear DG824M. Is it true that these modem routers, among others, will become redundant as Eircom and other ISPs are now switching to ADSL2?

ADSL 2 should be backwards compatible, so your router will continue to work, but you'll have a hard time selling it on when the time comes. It could be used a cheap bogstandard router though.

Eircom are moving to ADSL2??? Really? I thought only Smart were going to use ADSL2?

Some equipmnt will be upgradable via firmware - some wont. Netgear are not very good for firmware upgrades, but I stick by them anyway because they always work

It was actually a fault with the modem on my DG824M. Kept disconnecting. So hope to get an updated model when I RMA. Also I was wrong suggesting Eircom are going to use ADSL2. Only Smart are. Eircom are keeping ADSL for modem compatability sake.
