I'm going to be getting a cheque in Sterling in the next few days. I want to lodge it into my bank account. Whats the story here? Do I just hand it to the cashier and the conversion is done on their computer or am i charged a commission or something per usual?

Depends on your bank, but I've lodged loads of sterling cheques into my AIB account via the Foreign Exchange desk

Same here. The drawback is that they take longer to clear (over a working week if I remember).

Im not 100% certain here but if you logde it directly into your account in your own branch of your own bank you will not get charged commission.

Having said that, I always lodge everything in my own branch as its the most convenient for me, so maybe someone can shed any light on whether this is the case for all branches.

In AIB you can lodge Sterling cheques at the Foreign Exchange counter for a feee of €1.50. It's not a Vodafone dividend cheque by any chance?
